"Video: Majken, 'Dreaming of Franco'"

A self-professed “lover of Velvet Underground and breakfast in bed,” Danish born/L.A. dwelling artist Majken wanted to write songs about “L.A.’s mad nights, quiet times by the Nordic fjord and the seduction of Paris” so she traveled to these places, had magical experiences, and wrote an album called “Dancing Mountains,” to be released this spring. She says, “These songs are my stories of a troubled time, the dancing mountains in my backyard, the owls outside my window singing loud, lonely nights in a magical city, falling in love with madness, those highs and that sunrise. It’s about the waves, it’s all bout the waves.” Production duties were split by Jesse Nolan of Caught a Ghost in L.A. and Maxime Sokolinski of Hologram (and, remember Sweaters) in Paris. First single “Dreaming Of Franco” is an upbeat garage pop song about “living it up” in the wake of being dumped. The video is all cotton candy, ferris wheel, lolipops, friends, and sunny car ride—a recipe for getting over that jerk, Franco, whoever you are. - Buzzbands LA, Kevin Bronson

"Majken - Dreaming of Franco (Video)"

You always wanted to know how the american dream could really look like? Then you should watch the new video for ‘Dreaming Of Franco’ by Danish singer/songwriter Majken’s which is taken from her debut EP ‘Deronda Hotel’. It’s a dreamy optimistic ode to the Californian way of life. With a lot of sirupy smiles and soft surf-pop melodies ‘Dreaming Of Franco’ speaks out one of the most important things in life: have fun even though there are hard times sometimes! - Nordic by Nature

"VIDEO PREMIERE: MAJKEN / "WHERE IT ALL BEGINS""

You might already know Danish artist and beauty Majken Christensen. Majken, a painter, musician, dancer, filmmaker and photographer, acts as a general muse to her peers. Making music under her first name Majken, she played percussion for Tropical Nirvana, led by French singer songwriter Antoine Debarge. Under her own solo projects we found out that in addition to playing drums masterfully she has a ethereal husky voice that draws you in to her artist world accompanied by wet guitar riffs that is reminiscent of old-school rock and roll with an indie-pop twist. Her video for ‘Where It All Begins’ is directed by a LADYGUNN favorite, L.A. based photographer and director Shelby Duncan. The video is visually delightful with a whimsical narrative full of palm trees, polka dots and a love that only artists can experience. - Ladygunn Magazine / Story Koko Ntuen

"Tracks Of the Day - Majken - 'Deronda Hotel EP'"

Somewhere between Scandipop and U.S garage fuzz you’ll find Majken Christensen, a Danish born singer songwriter based in L.A. She releases music under her forename Majken and has recently unveiled her rather wonderful début EP ‘Deronda Hotel.’ With the EP’s release date being rather perilously close to the pre-Xmas avalanche of best of lists and sleigh bells, we decided to hold over any post until till the New Year.

Although Majken’s first love has always been music and writing she has a background as a professional contemporary dancer and also as a visual artist who paints and creates her own film/video art. She’d previously played percussion for indie pop outfit Tropical Nirvana led by French singer songwriter Antoine Debarge and has on occasion also joined Magic Wands on stage as a “dancing” percussionist.

She tells us the title of the EP ‘Deronda Hotel’ is a homage to a steep winding street in the Hollywood hills that she called home whilst “curing the broken heart” that inspired much of her work.

“These songs are my stories of a troubled heart, falling in love with madness, the search of golden walls, loneliness in the hills of a magical city, haunting wild nature, all tomorrow’s dreams, those nights and that sunrise“

‘Deronda Hotel‘ contains six tracks which serve to highlight Majken’s keen ear for melody and ability to address the darker side of life. The early lo fi shimmer of Dum Dum Girls and the quirky dark pop sensibility of Lykke Li are in evidence on tracks such as the effervescent surf pop of ‘Dreaming Of Franco’ and the hazy guitar jangle of ‘Fainted Love.’ But there’s also a dark atmosphere of foreboding on tunes such as ‘You And I’ which is reminiscent of Throwing Muses, and the ghostly ‘Madness.’

All in all an excellent début from an artist who will definitely be worth keeping tabs on during the coming year. - THE VPME / Andy Von Pip

"Majken and the Dreaming Fjord"

There’s much that can be said about Majken and her music, ordinary is not one of them. The Nordic fjord of her native Denmark, the grand boulevards of France, and her sojourns in Los Angeles infuse and define her songs. Listening to her music is akin to a waking dream, an eternal twilight blanketing every sphere, every star. She’ll touch your soul in places you didn’t know existed.

How much of your native Denmark has influenced your music, and how much of it, your adopted home in Los Angeles?

A lot, because it’s part of who I am! I grew up by the Nordic fjord and I’m obsessed with nature and the little moments it brings. Mostly in my writing. As far as the sound, California has been a huge influence. Life in LA, other musicians, falling in love and just the west coast feel of being free. But everything influences me, from the birds singing outside my window in the morning to weird people at the laundry mat.

You were a percussionist in Tropical Nirvana, where were you in your progression to where you are now? Were you planning to be your own artist then, simply biding your time, until an opportunity presented itself?

Tropical Nirvana (Antoine Debarge) is a really good friend of mine and we were roommates at the time, and he brought me on and it was so fun! I learned a lot. Before then I was mostly just secretly writing and playing, but he gave me courage to go for it. He heard some of my stuff and encouraged me to do my own music! Then I met Maxime Sokolinski and we started composing tracks together and it went from there. Never biding time. All part of the journey.

What musical instruments do you play, other than xylophone?

Guitar. A little drums. I have a background as trained dancer, so all rhythmic instruments come really natural to me. Someone gave me the nickname "tambourine dream” when I was playing with Magic Wands. But vocals and telling stories is my favorite!

How did “Where it All Begins” end up in an ad for ADER clothing?

It was meant to happen!

Your debut full album Dancing Mountains, will be released soon. How different will it be, as compared to Deronda Hotel?

Yes, I will have a release date very soon! Looking more like October or November. It’s on the same journey - the next part of the story from Deronda Hotel - so it has the same feel. A couple of the tracks from DH are on it too! 13 tracks total though. It’s all happening!

Bio

Majken (pronounced My-ken) is a Danish singer songwriter based in Los Angeles. She has released one EP Deronda Hotel and her debut album Dancing Mountains will be out this summer 2016.

“These songs are my stories of a troubled time, the dancing mountains in my backyard, the owls outside my window singing loud, lonely nights in a magical city, falling in love with madness, those highs and that sunrise. It’s about the waves, it’s all about the waves” says Majken.

Recorded in Los Angeles and Paris, Majken just finished ‘Dancing Mountains’ after a journey between LA’s blinding nights, quiet times by the Nordic fjord (where she grew up) and the seduction of Paris. It’s a reminiscent of sixties low-fi in a pop rock dream daze, floating in a David Lynch’esk universe with raw and emotive lyrics.

A lover of Velvet Underground and breakfast in bed, Majken set out to write an album with a dreamy and real feel to it. Produced in collaboration with Jesse Nolan (Caught a Ghost) in Los Angeles and Maxime Sokolinski (Hologram) in Paris.

Her EP Deronda Hotel is an homage to the house in the Hollywood Hills where she lived for a year on the winding street Deronda Drive, which also influenced the way for the forthcoming album. It was here she started writing and recording her own songs while playing percussion for French indie pop outlet Tropical Nirvana.

The early low fi shimmer of Dum Dum Girls and the quirky pop sensibility of Lykke Li are in evidence on tracks such as the effervescent surf pop of Dreaming of Franco and the hazy guitar jangle of Fainted Love. But there’s also a dark atmosphere of foreboding on tunes such as You and I which is reminiscent of Throwing Muses, and the ghostly Madness, as Andy Von Pip puts it.

Majken plays live with a full band who has developed her ideas into a fresh take on a classic sound. If you let her, she’ll take you on a journey in her own universe with the lead of her husky vocals and strange dance moves on stage.
