"Major Green "Stay Tuned""

If you live anywhere near Raleigh, North Carolina, you have SEEN the name Major Green! When it comes to Marketing himself and his brand, Jabre Green knows exactly what he's doing. He's not only the Artist "MAJOR GREEN", he's also the mind and hands behind iKandi Productions, a Multi-Media Company that handles Engineering, Production, Recording, Photography, Events, Graphics and T-Shirt Pressing. With his wife, Shariah Green, by his side, all I see is a winning combination.

"Stay Tuned" is a well-tuned flow of catchy hooks, strong lyricism, and high energy production, with DJ Cen City (one of the most prominent Indy supporting DJ's in the area) on his hosting job. This is one of those CD's I can pop in, ride to and find myself rapping along with after the first spin. Make sure you catch the video for the intro track, Power, and go check out Major Green on the stage at the 2015 Durm HipHop Summit this coming weekend.

"Major Green's Latest Release is Board the Plane"

Jabre Green, also known as Major Green, is a local rapper, producer, and engineer whose music is surprisingly suitable for a younger audience despite hip hop’s reputation for having a negative influence on the youth.

Born in Pittsboro, North Carolina, Green moved to Raleigh to attend St. Augustine’s University where he studied Engineering Mathematics. His interest in music goes back to middle school where he played tenor sax in the band. The environment he grew up in and his knowledge of music composition have fueled his passion and pursuit of a career in hip hop.

One of the most notable and maybe admirable aspects of Major Green’s music is the fact that his lyrics are clean, particularly on his latest project Board The Plane. While hip hop is notorious for having vulgar lyrics and explicit content, Green is more selective in the topics he chooses to rap about and does so with decency. He admits to letting loose from time to time, especially on songs with other artists, but he also says, “If it’s just me on the record, it’s probably going to be clean.”

Now most of us are familiar with the age-old expression “sex sells.” While this may be true, it’s not only true about sex but drugs and violence as well. We tend to be drawn to such attractions. Therefore, clean rap may be thought of as bland and boring because it lacks excitement or fails to capture the listener’s attention. However, Green doesn’t limit himself lyrically and, instead, is able to expand on his subject matter while delivering hard-hitting songs. The variety of collaborations he puts together helps him create an original sound and showcase moments of brilliance on Board The Plane.

For example, “Art Gallery” is a catchy tune with a sweet melody that has a perfect blend of kicks and snares, making it hard not to groove to. A trumpet faintly plays throughout the entirety of the song, adding a touch of jazziness to the track. There are also several references to famous art, such as the Mona Lisa, contained in the lyrics that build on the theme and make the song fitting of its title.

“One Day” features a poetic performance from a featured artist in the intro and outro that will satisfy anyone with an appreciation for spoken word. “Makes Sense,” produced by Major Green, has an interesting delivery on the hook where Green and the singer alternate lines. An electric guitar and high-pitched choir sounds give it flavor and create an ominous vibe while the humming of its synthetic strings is powerful and effectively sets the tone.

He may have gone to school to study engineering, but Green certainly understands business. As an independent artist, he believes keeping his lyrics clean makes him more marketable. This allows him to perform at local churches and schools which gives him an opportunity to reach out and offer guidance to teenagers. That’s what drew him in to hip hop. He views it as a sort of communicative medium, an avenue to the youth through which he can deliver a message.

Humble, Major Green is more concerned about the experience in hip hop than anything else. Rather than pursuing the fortune and fame, he focuses on achieving personal goals such as performing at South by Southwest (SXSW), an annual series of film, interactive, and music festivals held in Austin, Texas. He also wants to tour the world. As for now, keep your eyes and ears open. You may be able to catch him at local venues like The Pour House or Deep South The Bar.

"Major Green "Art Gallery""

It took me a minute to finally sit back and check this song out, and I've played it numerous times since. Major Green is a man of many talents, and I'm loving the sound and flow of "Art Gallery". Being the CEO/Creator of iKandi Productions has inspired Major Green to learn every aspect of the music and entertainment business. He not only writes and records music, he also produces, does his own Mixing and Mastering, edits videos, designs his own artwork and flyers, presses his own tees and duplicates cd's. He's a "Business" in himself.

"Art Gallery" features singer T. Graham, Production credit goes to Tspoon.

Major Green, aka Jabre Green, is currently working on his new album, and recently released the Official Video for another favorite of mine, "Good And The Bad".
