"Boca Ratons own performs at the Dubliner"

For 20-year-old Boca Raton pop vocalist Makayla Duvall, the talent and pressure of American Idol pales in comparison with successfully auditioning to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

"I competed in season eight of American Idol, and finished in the top 50 in Jacksonville," says the sophomore vocal performance and music business major. "But Berklee was even more competitive. I had to audition twice to get in."

Berklee has historically produced jazz/fusion musicians like Gary Burton, Joe Lovano and John Scofield, but the school has also graduated acclaimed female singer/songwriters from pop (Aimee Mann) to blues (Susan Tedeschi). Duvall is studying music theory and keyboards to hone the compositional skills to accent her powerful voice, and working on her debut CD, [i]Moving On[i], with Los Angeles-based producer Warren Huart (The Fray, Better Than Ezra).

Duvall also beat out hundreds of applicants to perform a one-hour streaming online concert from a Boston-based Best Buy store last month. Her band for forthcoming area shows includes locals (guitarist Dorian Vaz, bassist Hernan Fernandez) and Berklee boys (keyboardist Angel Echevarria, drummer Jonathan Newman) on originals and covers from the 1970s up to Paramore, Rihanna, and Adele.

See Makayla Duvall at 10 p.m. on Friday at The Dubliner, 435 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, (561-620-2540), at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday at The Hurricane, 640-7 E. Yonrico Scott (yonricoscott.net) exudes personality with guitarist Derek Trucks’ band, and the drummer’s self-titled group plays a double-bill with the trio of chameleonic guitarist Bobby Lee Rodgers (bobbyleerodgers.com) at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Bamboo Room, 25 S. J St., Lake Worth. $22. (561-585-2583) The kids from the School of Rock in North Palm Beach (schoolofrock.com/northpalmbeach) play the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday at Swampgrass Willy’s, 9910 Alternate A1A, Palm Beach Gardens. $12 for adults, $6 for students. (561-625-1555) Area rockabilly trio Slip & the Spinouts (slipandthespinouts.com) plays a Delray Beach mini-tour at 9 p.m. on Saturday at Elwood’s, 301 N.E. "Music Promotion-Makayla Duvall"

Did the music promotion shots of Makayla Duvall, an upcoming recording artist based out of Boca Raton Florida. This was much different from all the guy bands that I have been working with. We were in an air conditioned studio, there were many outfit changes and lots of long blond hair.
