Bio

MakeBelieve is coming of age. This is not to say that everything up until now has been child’s play. On the contrary, the band’s achievements in 2010 have been pretty impressive.

The band has been involved in the 3FM Serious Talent project, performed shows at Sziget and at Lowlands, has conducted a successful tour of the Netherlands and the band’s videos are broadcast regularly on TV and watched on the Internet. The video that accompanies ‘From The Start’ has been viewed almost 205 000 times on MakeBelieve’s YouTube channel, and the ‘Another Night At The Disco’ video reached #1 in the TMF NL Charts, while occupying a top 10 position in the TMF Superchart for more than 10 weeks. In addition, the band released the first part of the ambitious album project ‘City Lights’. The band chose to produce the album in three chapters rather than going for a traditional release. This enables fans with a low budget to collect the album in instalments, and allows the band more time to write new (and better!) songs. A further advantage of this approach is that the effect of the album campaign will be extended over a longer period.

But in 2011, the band has started to point its career in a new direction. “We have become aware that our song writing skills are developing”, says the band’s singer Joey Dussel. “We’ve been playing the songs on the first EP for quite a while, and they were originally written when we were (even) younger than we are now.” adds guitarist Björn Baay. “Maybe we look at things a little differently nowadays, we notice different aspects of what’s going on around us, and that’s what we write about in our songs.” Joey clarifies this further: “We write about our experiences and about how we feel.”

This new direction has already become apparent with the release of ‘City Lights’ EP2, in early 2011. This was released during the Eurosonic/Noorderslag festival in Groningen, and was the second best selling record at the prestigious festival, where the band was invited to perform for the third year in a row. EP2 includes, for example, the song ‘Home’ about the longing for someone to love, and ‘Your Son’ about the loss of a parent. Not only has the subject matter developed, but also the music is different from what we can normally expect from MakeBelieve. It is more restrained and introverted.

Right now, the band is busy with the preparations for the upcoming ‘City Lights’ tour that will kick off in April. The band will also be going into the studio during March to record the third and final instalment of ‘City Lights’. The band are tight-lipped about how it will sound, but when pressed they reveal that they are working on a “summertime” track together with their producer Arno Krabman.

This musical development has not gone unnoticed abroad. The band signed a management contract with CMC Entertainment in Munich in early February 2011. The management agency had been following the band since the beginning of 2009, but, on hearing the last single ‘Home’, CMC Entertainment decided that the time was ripe to sign the group for the German, Swiss and Austrian markets.

These activities and developments are all designed to mark 2011 as the year that MakeBelieve can be said to have truly come of age.
