"Aberdeen's T Fest 2011: The Official Review"

Glasgow’s MakeThisRelate have had a hell of a year. Fresh off the Red Bull Bedroom Jam tour (playing the likes of Download, T in the Park, Sonisphere and more), you would half expect the band to rest on their laurels at least a tad after a busy Summer. Instead, two thirds of the band (the regular bassist being replaced by one of the guys from Aspen Tide) come up north to headline the Daily Dischord Stage at this year’s T Fest, and they waste no time showing off what a fine live band they are. Playing such high pressure sets around the UK over the Summer has clearly had a positive affect on the trio’s live performance. It’s a set which is bolstered by the sheer confidence and ease each member demonstrates in their role, but equally the togetherness of it all (even with a stand in bassist) just makes it such an enjoyable set. Half of those in attendance are sitting next door waiting for the festival headliners, which is awfully disappointing, but MakeThisRelate don’t particularly care. They finish their set with a great rendition of ‘Sugar Glass’, thank the audience for watching, and walk off stage as if they were in the comfort of their own home. Fantastic. 8/10 - Daily Dischord

"SINGLE: MakeThisRelate, Sugar Glass"

Glasgow-based pop-rock trio MakeThisRelate are yet another of what seems like hordes of Scottish bands who seem to be doing well right now: Biffy Clyro, Twin Atlantic, Flood of Red and Yashin to name but a few.

Taking influence from Jimmy Eat World, Fightstar and their fellow Scotsmen Biffy Clyro, they have a great pop-rock sound: loud, anthemic and emotional all at the same time.

‘Sugar Glass’ is a great song: sure, it’s nothing groundbreaking and by all means it’s been done before, but if they can make an album full of catchy, heartwrenching songs like this one, they could be onto a winner. - Bring The Noise

"Review: MakethisRelate – Sugar Glass (Single)"

Glasgow rockers MakethisRelate are looking to capitalise on a busy festival filled summer with the release of new single ‘Sugar Glass’. It’s a big’ol tune packed with melodic powerchords and stadium sized chorus hooks, the kind of recipe that has been working so well for Lower Than Atlantis this year.

Frontman Kevin Walls vocals provide nice raw harmonies, his thick Scottish accent giving a little edge to proceedings while driving guitars push things along at a nice steady pace. All this rocking goodness builds into a cheeky moment of harmonic calm before the final roaring chorus. This kind of anthemic rock is definitely the sound of ambition and it’s sure to go down a treat with all the new friends they’ve made this summer!

MAKETHISRELATE – 7/10

"Live Review: Hevy Music Festival – Port Lympne Wild Animal Park – 5th – 7th August"

The 3 piece from Glasgow took hold on the Redbull Jam stage moments before legends Funeral for a Friend took to the main next door. It was a perfect slot as people gathered and their music was perfect for leading towards it. Their music was melodic enough to sing a long to but had moments of heaviness to please the hardcore kids watching. Powerful breaks in the songs built up the momentum for an immense chorus. - Hit The Floor Magazine

"Sonisphere 2011 - The Kerrang! Review"

Rainy morning be damned, MAKE THIS RELATE (KKKK) bring a little sunshine of their own to the Red Bull tent with their underdog fire enlivening their sweet melodies.

4/5 - Kerrang! Magazine

"Sacred Betrayal w/ South of Summer, MakethisRelate"

"MakethisRelate take to the stage in the darkened depths of Ivory Blacks, but they'd fit better out the street; their lilting post-punk swaying an already bustling crowd with a warmth evocative of Jimmy Eat World by way of Idlewild."
Sam Law

Overall rating: KKKK (4/5) - Kerrang! Magazine

"Make This Relate; One More Second Chance"

The alternative four-piece hailing from Glasgow were brought together in 2008 by ‘their love of rock heroes Biffy Clyro’ and with one listen of their EP, it is evident that this influence transfers to their music. The band have formed a dedicated fan base, played sold out shows and now plan to ‘take things to the next level’!

Watching Cars Crashing contains a strong instrumental introduction with high energy levels from the first chords played. As soon as the bands vocals emerge it is evident that they are carrying on the strong Scottish vocals, projected by the likes of Biffy Clyro and Twin Atlantic. The instruments in sections do perhaps over-ride the vocals, but it comes across that this is a deliberate move making the instruments the most powerful part of the track. The song contains a good mix of tempos and would work well for live interaction.

Warm Hands/Frozen Heart again contains another strong introduction. The band manage to merge their instruments with the vocals well and in sections a crowd could easily join in with, which is a nice touch. The slower section within the song also works very well and is an unexpected part in the track which suits the vocal stylings well. The band manage to leap straight back into action after this section is complete and are back to their full energy projected from the beginning of the track.

Stop. Look. Listen is the strongest track on the EP. It contains very catchy lyrics which you can pick up easily with just one listen, which also makes this song a good track for a live set. The song again leaps straight into the action with another strong introduction. The vocals in this track come across stronger than the previous tracks and are extremely alike those in the Twin Atlantic/Biffy Clyro style. The track also contains a very strong instrumental section with an extremely catchy beat, which would transcend to a live set with ease.

This Conversation Is Missing Your Voice is a slower track on the EP from the band, showcasing that they are able to carry of this style. The vocals are strongest in this track and let you properly appreciate the lead singer’s voice. Again, the song is host to a catchy beat with strong crowd interaction and powerful instrumental sections. This songs instrumental section is perhaps the strongest out of the tracks.

After just one listen of the EP it is evident that these tracks would work extremely well live. There are many sections for crowd interaction and with the instrumental sections, they are sure to be a success. The band show strengths in their song introductions and if you are a fan of the Scottish vocal stylings of bands such as Twin Atlantic and Biffy Clyro, they are definitely worth a listen. With the instrumental sections and contagious lyrics, it seems that catching the band live would be a worthwhile investment for a new upcoming Scottish band.

The band have recently released their second music video for ‘Stop.Look.Listen’ and you can view it over at www.MakethisRelate.com and are also planning a tour for March this year, which will be announced very shortly so stay tuned to their website to find out more! - Love Music Love Life

"MakethisRelate – One More Second Chance"

Sitting staring at the press release for this EP was one of the easier things I had to do in writing this review. It looks lovely. Very well thought out and someone with a great deal of time and a copy of Photoshop has created it. The reason I mention this is the fact that you might not realise that we all get sent press releases with even the smallest EP/Single review that we do which tells us pretty much everything we need to know about the bands so that some of us can sound a) well-informed or b) (and most sickening of all) chummy. I tend to go in for the former, in case you’re wondering.

The MakethisRelate press release does well to initially pounce upon the band’s love of Biffy Clyro because in all honesty, Early Biffy Clyro is exactly what “One More Second Chance” sounds like. The counterpoint of light, melodic, typically-Scottish alternative rock mixed with swaggering, heavy elements and influences is lifted straight from the liner notes of “Blackened Sky” and that should be the death-knell in this EP. The only thing left to say would be “don’t bother with this one”.

Let’s hang on for a second though; one listen to the second track ‘Warm Hands/Frozen Heart’ will show you that this band is unashamedly in the mould of their forebears and there’s nothing at all wrong with that. This is ‘big-venue’ Scottish rock that you wouldn’t be surprised to hear in a stadium. By the end of the 22 minutes, you’ll be “whoa-whoa-ing” (I’m coining that) for days after and what could be more life affirming than that?

Sure, you may already feel like this has been done before but with Biffy having lost their way, disorientated by Zane Lowe’s adoring gaze, the time has come for a new group to step up and take on the mantle of the heroes of Scottish rock. On the basis of their record to date, that could well be MakethisRelate. Admittedly, this EP is a little more Firhill than Hampden but the potential and anthemic persuasion of MakethisRelate can only see them go on to bigger and better things.

6/10 - The Ark

"Make This Relate: One More Second Chance EP"

One more second chance is the entitled EP from Scottish band Make This Relate they already have a distinctive sound and have only been going since September 2008 the thing, which sets them a part from a lot of the alternative emo bands is that they keep close to their roots.

By this I mean this four piece band do not try to put any Americanisms into their work you would be hard pressed not to realise that they were Scottish and that is a good thing it is hard to say how many bands have tried to copy the sound and accents of these American bands.

This okay if it works for the band, however I still cannot agree with bands who whole-heartedly turn their back on their sound to get signed, hence I have a great deal of respect for this band.

On the same token although this is a great EP you can tell they have gone with tracks that showcase their sound a lot like the first number of EP’s from Funeral for a Friend released. Read carefully this is not a criticism it just means this band truly know how to play the game and that is a plus as it is no longer enough to be good musicians any more you have to have the full package.

I believe this guitar driven quartet are well on the way to being the finished article especially if last years sold out EP Pick your side is anything to go bye, it is great to see their sound maturing a year on as well as being more confident and comfortable highlighting their own style.

The stand out track ‘This conversation is missing your,’ is a whopping seven minutes long a bit self indulgent, but nevertheless a track to be savoured I hope to hear more massively expressive tracks like this from the boys in the future as it was worth the wait. - Quenched Music

"Review: Make This Relate- One More Second Chance EP"

MakethisRelate (MtR) seem to be one of these bands; where everything clicks from stunning guitar melodies, strong vocals and powerful riffs. One More Second chance the second chance for you to hear these wonderful lads music on CD is another example of great scottish music, you like Biffy Clyro or Twin Atlantic? Well these guys have got both, the structure of Biffy Clyro and the tasteful catchy harmonies and riffs of Twin Atlantic and not to mention strong Glaswegian vocals. One More Second Chance is MtRs second EP with 4 tracks; Watching Cars Crashing, Warm Hands/Frozen Heart, Stop.Look.Listen and This Conversation is missing your voice. Each track as strong in every way as the previous. The track i feel you all should check out is Stop.Look.Listen. Probably the most powerful from the release, Kevins Vocals have you wanting the next line throughout the song. The EP is available to listen on the bands MySpace, Spotify and on iTunes. 4/5

The band have the following dates;
11th October - Classic Grand - Glasgow (Kevin Acoustic Set)

Check them out if you like to see a band who sound as good if not better live as they do on the EP! - Glasgow Music

"Review: Make This Relate - One More Second Chance"

My first thought whilst listening to this four tracker - these guys are from Scotland. No faux American accents here, it's the most broad Glaswegian accent you've ever heard front a band. If you thought Biffy Clyro gave a nod to their heritage, wait until you hear Kevin Walls. MTR borrow heavily from Biffy throughout. They're a decent band - actually the worst song, in my opinion, is the first track with the last the best - so if ever there was an EP to show you need to stick with a band and give them a proper listen, this is the one. 'This Conversation Is Missing Your Voice' is probably the song the band sound most comfortable. All too often it just sounds a little plodding and like they're trying to impersonate other bands. They do a good job, as I say, this is a decent effort. But I like bands to sound like they know what they want to do and the last track is the only one I think I would take away and listen to again, for pleasure. The guitars build, the vocals soar and the drums hit hard. It's a good mix and shows the band clearly have the talent to write great songs. They just need the consistency to do it more often. 3/5 - Punktastic

Bio

MakethisRelate is a three piece alternative rock band from Glasgow, Scotland. Brought together in 2008, the band steadily began to develop their sound: a captivating mix of stadium sized pop melodies with the energy and aggression of alternative rock, delivered through a decidedly honest Scottish vocal. Their influences include American emo luminaries, Jimmy Eat World and local rock heavyweights, Biffy Clyro.

Following some great support slots with The Damned Things, Rolo Tomassi and Elliot Minor, the band's local profile began to rise and soon enough MakethisRelate had gathered a following of dedicated fans in their hometown, who played a vital role in propelling the band towards bigger stages - including a slot at a sold-out show in the legendary King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. In 2011, MakethisRelate toured relentlessly and during the summer of the same year, the band was selected by a panel of industry judges to play a number of major UK festivals including Download, Sonisphere and T in the Park.

Off the back of their festival appearances, the band released their honest and powerful new single, Sugar Glass, which was mixed and mastered by Jason Wilcock (You Me At Six, We Are The Ocean, Fightstar). The band does not shy away from the fact that their new single deals with their experiences within the music industry over the past few years. Frontman and lyricist, Kevin Walls stated “there are bands out who are only interested in making money and there are others who use technology to ‘enhance’ their live performance. That’s not the band we want to be. We started this band because we love making music and we love performing - we hope that comes across in our music”.

"We suggest you catch them now, before they start playing even bigger stages." - The Metro
