"irish artist-makewait"

Among the English-speaking nations of the world, Ireland may be geographically small, but in terms of her impact on international music, she stands tall indeed. How is it that such a ridiculously disproportionate number of internationally famous musicians and bands call Ireland home?

What is it about this small, rain-soaked island that breeds such excellent music?

I’ve been exploring that vein of thought in this, the seventh in a series of profiles I’ve been doing on prominent Irish musical artists and groups.

This week’s artist is Makewait.

Because Tuesday is the release of the songwriter CD I thought I should cover one of the artists on this year’s CD.

Unlike the other artists I have covered so far in this series, Makewait is a truly unsigned and independent group. The trio of Ian Bell, Derek Daly, Cormac Sheerin hail from Athlone and have been playing music together from year dot.

Although they’ve just the one EP to their name, the three musicians are churning out catchy melodies and harmonies, reminiscent of the later Beatles. Having played together for as long as they have, the solid musicianship of the three lads is augmented by their comradery - their music blends as well as their personalities.

Makewait has only started branching out, playing supporting acts around Ireland where their original music has been well received. The songwriter showcase was their first acoustic gig, and the format suited the band well, showcasing their vocal harmonies and letting the quality of their writing shine claerly through the sparse instrumentation.

Makewait: an up and coming Irish act.

"make way for .....makewait"

Make way for ………Makewait.

ATHLONE trio Ian Bell, Derek Daly and Cormac Sheerin are Makewait, a unique band with a unique sound. The lifelong friends have been playing together for ten years now.
Initially incorporating other artist’s music into their gigs, the overwhelming reaction the band received from their own material has encouraged them to develop their own original tunes and songs.
With Derek on drums, Cormac on bass and Ian on lead guitar , for the past four years Makewait have been perfecting their own sound and performing in venues all over the country, most recently supporting ‘the Blizzards’ in the Palace Loft, Athlone.
This band are, as Daly says “all about the music” and have mastered their melodies in Cormac’s shed on the Dublin Road for years. Unlike most bands fixated on image Makewait are original, genuine music lovers.
All three, Ian, a software engineer from Valleycourt, Cormac, an accountant and Derek, who works in advertising and is from Retreat, are ex students of the Marist college, Athlone.
Following the release of their debut EP, songs such as Try, Little Towns and I’d be lost without you, have achieved immense airplay on numerous radio stations.
Now Makewait will perform at the ‘Athlone Castle Rocks Gig’ on July 14, so you’ll have a chance to witness full frontal local talent.
Tickets for the gigs are available from Music World, Golden Island and gates open at eight pm on the night.
Supported by bands such as Murv, Kerbside and My Fallen Empire the cream of Athlone’ music scene are on your castle doorstep.

Bio

We are a three piece band who have known each other all their lives. Coming from Athlone, a small town in the middle of Ireland, all we ever wanted to do was to write music and for as many people as possible to hear it. All members lived within a mile of each other, went to the same school, and share the same passion for music as each other. In a way we are a quite unique band where we are not relying or putting pressure on one member to write all the songs. All three write music, lyrics and sing which is very rare in todays musical climate. Our distinct vocal sounds can be heard on their debut ep, which has received plenty of air play on a variety of music stations in Ireland, since it was released in 2006. Songs such as "try" and "id be lost without you" show our different, yet infectious melodic styles which can only come from all members sharing the writing capabilities. With our ability to write songs, closeness as a group, and drive to succeed,Makewait will not give up on the only thing they have ever loved and enjoyed!MUSIC
Some interest was shown recently from Parlaphone U.K when one of their A&R guys got in touch.Currently in the process of organising a suitable recording studio,we hope to go recording in the near future.
We have also played support to the Blizzards and narrowly missed out on opening the midland music festival playing support to the Waterboys and Mundy to name a few.
We decided to use the name Makewait as we wanted to get a name that meant nothing.By doing this,we hope that when people hear the name Makewait in the future,it will mean alot to them.
