Bio

MAKr was formed in August 2010 by local established musicians, each of its members have over 10 years of stage experience. In less than a year, MAKr has shared the stage with some incredible talent; most recently, a member of Thievery Corporation (one of MAKr's biggest influences) joined the band on stage for an inspired freestyle.

MAKr is an improvisational band fusing live instrumentation with electronic technique. Drawing from an ever expanding list of influences, the MAKr sound ranges from downtempo dub, to danceable club grooves and beyond. MAKr's live sets are almost entirely improvised, allowing the band to create a direct reflection of the setting it's in and the crowd it's playing to. MAKr is living and breathing. Witness the evolution.

MAKr's influences include Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation, Portishead, NIN, Amon Tobin, Booka Shade, DJ Krush, and King Tubby.

MAKr is from NYC and has played Mercury Lounge, Tammany Hall, Nublu, The Delancey, Flawless Boat Parties, and Sullivan Room.

Info about MAKr's members:

MAKr keyboard, bass, and trombonist Ed Zang heads Exposure NYC (Digitally Imported's NYC radio station). The station focuses on minimal, tech, and electronic music made in New York City and has about 100 artists on it (himself included). Most of the projects that he plays with or produces are live/electronic crossover acts. He has dj'd and performed since 1999 in electronic acts such as Sasha, Steve Lawler, and Paul Oakenfold all over the USA, South America, and Europe. His individual electronic (dj) releases have been released through Cotopaxi Records and live sets played on Exposure NYC. Ed's roots are in funk music and he played trombone with various acts throughout the 1990's, starting with his college band, Jigamoga. Ed will tear the roof off the sucka if he has to.

MAKr drummer Blake Ferm, was caught in an avalanche a long time ago and fell into a deep crevasse. Inside this icy cavern he discovered a small music making device and began sequencing beats and basslines, melting the ice around him. When he reached the surface he made his way to base camp and set forth on a mission to find others who could melt ice.

MAKr guitarist Chris Mariner, has been on a musical path for nearly 20 years; and although he's been teaching for more than half that time, he consistently strives to maintain a "beginner's mind". While Chris has always enjoyed a wide range of sonic influences, the one constant has been the element of improvisation; exploring the endless possibilities of the moment at hand.

MAKr turntablist Tran, likes teenage mutant ninja turtles and making noises with vinyl. He is the best turntablist in New York City and his mixer is signed by DJ Qbert.

MAKr visual artist VJF, enjoys making things look good and is particularly happy when he gets to project his visual deliciousness alongside the musical talent known as MAKr. In his spare time he enjoys hot tubs, scrabble, ice climbing, dinner, The Salvation Army, and training tigers.
