""Demos" review (02-01-10)"

Malavera are an indie rock band from Buenos Aires, Argentina,
formed in 2007 by Freddy Guazzone di Passalacqua on vocals, bass player Jackson Pollock, Johann Galati and Gonzalo Barrio Linares on guitars/vocals and Matias Smaldone on drums.

Malavera’s debut E.P is wrought with emotional disconnection and faded glory, epic sweep and intimate catharsis. Inevitably, the hype exceeds return but there's no getting around that this is incredibly powerful and affecting. Loss, regret, and a minor key brilliantly permeate jangling guitars and rhythmic and tonal shifts-- and although it's no Closer or OK Computer, it's not unthinkable that this band might aspire to such heights.

It blows the dust off of the classic American protopunks—especially Velvet Underground and the Stooges—adding to that an enthusiasm for simple alternative pop luminescence that runs closer to Alex Chilton and the Replacements than to punk proper. The songs are short, rough, and retro.

The band seem to have already learned a hell of a lot from there influences, and have used them come up with something singularly original that’s all their own, an amazing accomplishment for a debut EP.

Bio

Formed in 2007 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Malavera sounds nothing like the south american music scene and instead has been compared to british rock and american garage music.
