"Local band "Gets Funky""

Local Band "Gets Funky" in McHenry County
As published December 2, 2004 in The Tartan - Student Newspaper of Mchenry Country College

For those music fans that are looking for the next band that will be successful because of good music, look no further. The band is Malfunktion and they are up and comers in the local music scene.

While they can never be their replacement, the band that inspires them the most is the recently defunct band Phish. Lead guitarist and lead singer Nate Kandler doesn’t shy away from the fact that his band is strongly influenced by Phish, so it's no surprise Kandler credits that band for some of his musical inspiration. The other inspiration he named was early work from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. "Personal music interests basically make up what you play," he said.

Josh Maholovic from Wonder Lake plays guitar and joins Kandler for vocals. He credits "everybody" for his musical inspirations. "Every kind of music inpsires me," Maholovic said. "But I like G-Love, he inspires some of the bluesy, funky kind of music we play." Jim Seguin is from Cary and is the band's third bass player. Jesse Walters from Fox Lake plays drums. Kandler, Maholovic, and Walters have been together since their first band practice on September 27, 2002.

Kandler said the writing process is mostly trouble-free fro the band. The band has close to 20 original songs they now perform, adn Kandler is most proud of the song "Troubled Past". The band tries to have fresh ideas and try to keep away from sounding like other bands when writing songs. Maholovic says he likes to make each song he writes different from the last song. When asked about the song writing process, Kandler credited for their effort. "It's pretty smooth, it's a collaborative effort," he said.

Music is the drive behind the band's early success. It's the connective glue that keeps the band together, along with the writing of a song and then the music coming naturally together. “Music is the best thing in the world,” Kandler said. “It enriches life on all levels.”

The band likes to draw energy from the crowd and they also like to give energy to the fans at their shows. When asked what kind of mood Malfunktion’s music puts people into, Maholovic said it depended on what kind of mood the crowd is in to begin with. “We’ve been told we have a very energetic show. It gives people a lot of energy,” Maholovic said. - The Tartan

Bio

A four piece band that started in September of 2002. The band initially started with Josh Mihalovic and Nate Kandler who shared a common interest for many of the same jam bands, and later brought on drummer Jesse Walters and Jim Seguin on bass.
Both Josh and Nate are guitar players, who also share the vocal duties in the band.
They consider themselves a "jam band", but are not defined by any particular genre of music. Influenced by blues, funk, jazz and some good old fashioned American rock and roll. They have played with such bands as Rusted Root, Umphreys McGee, and Mr. Blotto (who have been generous enough to invite Malfunktion to play at several of their infamous BLOTTOPIA summer festivals).
We have also played at:
The Rave (Milwaukee, WI)
Wise Fools Pub (Chicago, IL)
The Clearwater Theater (West Dundee, IL)
602 North (Glendale Heights, IL)
Fantasy Lounge (Chicago, IL)
Griffins Public House (Chicago, IL)
Liquid Blues (Woodstock, IL)
DC Cobbs (Woodstock, IL)
Waverly House/Gold Note Lounge (Woodstock, IL)
Lenny The Legends (McHenry, IL)

And many more...
