Bio
Before I decided to venture into the literary arts and created my passion project, "Sapphire's Egypt," I was pursuing a career in music. I formed a band for my junior project in high school, 1996, called “The Malia Cortez Band.” We did so well that we stayed together for five years. During the course of those years, we performed all over the Portland/Vancouver area, honored with a review in a local music magazine, articles in the newspapers, performing live on 1010AM’s, “The Morning After Show,” a benefit concert for the YWCA’s battered women’s shelter, winning a spot performing at the Portland Rose Festival and playing for the Daisy Chain Music Fair benefit.
I had an incredible time during the years with my band and learned a lot from the immensely talented musicians that were part of the experience. Unfortunately we went our separate ways after recording our first professional album, "No More Staring at the Wall," in 2001. BUT if it wasn’t for the break up, I wouldn’t have been led to writing Sapphire’s Egypt, which is my current focus.
