Biography

Rusty Eklund is an accomplished musician and scholar and has spent more than 8 years in Mali, West Africa studying the rhythms and melodies of the jenbe, bonkolo, Jeli, and Wassalou ensembles. He is the author of "Songs and Rhythms from Mali" and "Rhythm Masters, Melody Makers".

Rusty holds a BA from The Evergreen State College in Mathematics and Ethnomusicology. He has spent the better part of the last 15 years in more than 20 countries on five continents studying and working with numerous cultures. He is a trained educator with extensive classroom teaching experience from the Elementary to University level. Rusty has presented workshops and performances at Eastern Oregon University, University of Oregon, Idaho State University, Western Washington University, Virginia Commonwealth University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary.
