"Mali Mali's Brotherly EP"

Mali Mali is a trio from New Zealand, created by Ben Tolich, also consisting of Joel Greatbatch and Peter Reid. The band's EP, Brotherly, may be old news to any New Zealand readers that may have stumbled their way over to TheRecordStache, considering that this collection of 5 tracks was released back in July of 2010. However, Mali Mali is new to me, and the music to be heard on Brotherly sounds like it could have been released just yesterday. So I'm just going to go on ahead and share Brotherly with the rest of the world, and we'll all pretend that this isn't two years old. Mali Mali's sound is very heavy on natural instruments, giving them a great presence that comes off sounding like they're just hanging out and playing right there in your living room. Acoustic guitars and stripped pianos are heard in the forefront of the songs, backed by lively drums, lush ambiances, and sweet soundscapes. The outcome is a styling of mainly alternative influences, with some folk inspirations, as well. My only complaint about Brotherly, is that 5 songs just isn't enough. - The Record Stache

"Brotherly EP"

Mali Mali’s first EP is a raw, unpolished, emotional journey that wears its heart on its sleeve. From heartbreak to happiness ‘Brotherly’ is packed with a sensitivity that might draw out feelings you didn’t know you had. Vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Ben Tolich provides a touching vocal performance, delivering each line with feeling and commitment. The tracks are fully committed to emotive expression, however, when listened to inattentively, they do have the tendency to run into each other. One highlight is Niece, a piano instrumental that showcases a melancholic sense of beauty. The EP shows attention to detail, especially in the lyrics, which are poetic, thoughtful and uplifting all at the same time. Recorded by David Parker is is a cohesive and well put together collection. Mali Mali live is a three-piece with Joel Greatbatch and Peter Reid. Tolich delivers an un-invasive, fresh, genuine performance, and the intricacy of these five tracks encourages repeat listens.

Bio

After parting ways with his original band in early 2010, Auckland based singer/songwriter Ben Tolich found new freedom in building songs and sounds on his own with an uninhibited state of mind. This impulse to create music with an honest and authentic mood grew alongside influence from artists such as The National, Sigur Rós and Bon Iver.

As a live band Mali Mali perform as a three-piece, not taking conventional roles and allowing members Joel Greatbatch and Peter Reid in whatever instrument they take their hands to, resulting in a minimal but lush sound.

Recorded and produced by David Parker at Little Monster studios and crafted with the help of fellow musicians Peter Reid, Andrew Madjar and Alex Freer (Artisan Guns), 'Brotherly' (Mali Mali's second EP) delivers stripped back and direct songs against a backdrop of contrasting atmosphere. Its subtle, slow burning and beautiful melodies colour your imagination with instinctive sensitivity, using hints and lures more than punches or shouts, to lasting effect.

Currently Mali Mali are adding the finishing touches to their debut album recorded in Cairns Australia by ex "The Middle East" member Mark Myers.
