Mallory Vanetti Interview for DoFunky.com.au
Interviewer: Ashlee Orange (Blogger)

Ashlee: Tell us the story of the band

Mallory: The story of the band starts two years ago when myself and producer Aldo J joined forces to create 'Domino Effekt'. I had just moved to Brisbane after a stint in Toowoomba studying theatre, and Aldo was looking for a female singer to collab with and so the magic began. I would come to Aldo with a melody and some lyrics and Aldo would create the most amazing music surrounding my little melody. Our style has flourished over the last two years and I can proudly say I haven't heard anything like us before. After we completed writing and recording close to 25 songs came the hard decision of which ones would make the first album 'Domino Effekt'. 11 songs were chosen and we feel these ones suited the album and had a great flow.

The last year has been spent creating a live band to bring the album to life. Along the way we have made some amazing friends and met some brilliant musicians. They are who you see today rocking the stage!

The Band are:
Mallory Vanetti - Vocals
Kai Patch - Drums
Tristan Field - Guitar
Cristian Corsini - Guitar
Kate Higginson - Bass/Backing Vocals

Ashlee: How long have you been together?

Mallory: We have been playing as a full band for just over three months now.

Ashlee: What are the group’s musical influences?

Mallory: System of a Down, P!nk, Paramore, Evanescence and Placebo.

Ashlee: What is your ultimate gig/venue?

Mallory: Oh man, I would love to see us packing out all of the entertainment centres around the world.

Ashlee: If you could have any band(s) to back you on that gig, who would it be?

Mallory: Evanescence for sure. I love those guys. Amy Lee has the most amazing voice, and if you listen carefully to her lyrics everything she says is so relateable.

Ashlee: Do you guys have the luxury of being full-time musicians, or do you have other jobs?

Mallory: I work full-time which is ok for now, but eventually would like to see myself not having to work as much and just live the muso life again. All the guys have other jobs as well. Chefs, retail workers, beauty shop owners but deep down we are all hard rockers :)

Ashlee: How did the band name come about?

Mallory: The band name came about a few years ago when I was still in Toowoomba. I was sitting down with a friend thinking of a cool 'stand out' name for myself. My real name is Mallory Van Noort and my mother's grandfather moved to Australia from Sicily many years ago, and his last name was Solvyayetti. I wanted my name to sound a little more italian and role off the toungue a little more. So we took my last name and my mothers family name and mixed them together to make Vanetti. It's stuck ever since.

Ashlee: How would you describe the band in one sentence?

Mallory: An addictive musical and emotional rollercoaster.

Ashlee: What’s your favourite song off the album?

Mallory: Hater

Ashlee: What is the inspiration for the song writing process?

Mallory: Everything I write about has happend to me. I guess you could say I write a diary entry and then turn it into a song. I don't try and hold back, but pour everything I am into these songs. What I really want is for people to listen to the songs, close their eyes and relate to them. Music is my therapy and if it helps me get on with life, then its bound to impact others too.

Ashlee: Is there a possibility for any video clips soon?

Mallory: We are still in the planning process of our first music video for song 'Perfect Girl' we are on the lookout for a good director to come onboard.

Ashlee: How long was the recording process and what are your favourite memories of the process?

Mallory: Aldo had a state of the art studio in his old house and we did it all ourselves. He's a very talented man. I would come to the studio twice a week, do some songwriting and record guide tracks, we'd have some dinner and then go for some serious takes. The recording process took well over a year. We didn't want to rush anything. Instead of putting out an E.P. we wanted to take the extra time to put out a full length album and make a big impact. We haven't officially released the album yet, but pre-release copies are available through our website, and facebook. Our next album (which we have already began writing as a full band) will be recorded at another studio.

Ashlee: Are you all from BrisVegas?

Mallory: We all now live in Brisvegas. Cristian is from Rome, Italy and made the move to Australia to pursue his love for music. Aldo our producer is from Glasgow, Scotland and has been living and breathing music his entire life. Tristan is of Aboriginal/Sri Lankin decent born in Australia and now resides in Brisbane. Kai is an Aussie boy, and I'm an Aussie too, with some Italian genes in me.

"Do Funky's Ashlee Orange reviews Mallory Vanetti's album Domino Effekt."

On the morning of Sunday 6th October, I was at the Brisbane Zombie Walk, to support a great cause (and let's face it, any opportunity to cosplay!) I didn’t expect that my attention was going to be taken by musical acts on the day. I watched on as the lead singer delivered the lyrics down the mic with captivating passion. The combination of guitars was electric, the bassist bringing the depth and the drums tying it all together. I stood there for the whole set looking at this Brisbane band, Mallory Vanetti.

Mallory Vanetti’s debut album ‘Domino Effect’ is one worth listening to. Its alternate rock sound and catchy melodies will get stuck in your head for days. Although the album does have an overall alternative feel, it seems to be an album divided. The first 6 songs are very catchy and sound like the perfect playlist to mourn someone who has hurt you deeply. In the centre of the division is Track 7, ‘Domino Effect’ (the song the album is named after) it definitely stands out with a more refined commercial sound. The album continues tracks 8-11 with a very theatrical presence, verging on a Nightwish/Evanescence style delivery.

Lyrically the songs are very much about heart break and it’s very straight to the point. The lyrical stand outs are ‘Big Bad Breaking Heart Machine’ and ‘Things Change’. Big Bad Breaking Heart Machine is a relatable song strung together nicely by the feisty lyrics. Initially I didn’t think much of the way the track began, something just didn’t seem to gel to me. But the more I listened, the less it stood out of place.

‘Perfect Girl’,’Ever Fall in Love' and ’Best Friends’ are really catchy and I have been singing them days on end, with them all centering around catchy hooks. Things Change, Secret and Hater have a rocking feel and seem more personal and open.

Things Change is probably my favourite song on the album. Every lyric spoke to me as if it was directed at me. I currently don’t talk to my mother, and the lyrics remind me of things that happened when I was younger. To me music that evokes emotion is on a whole other level, when I first heard 'Things Change' there was an immediate connection, I had tears in my eyes.

Overall, considering it’s the bands’ first recording it is pretty impressive. There are no songs on this album that I don’t like and I’m looking forward to seeing what is next for Mallory Vanetti.

Stand Out Tracks are:
- Big Bad Breaking Heart Machine
- Things Change
- Perfect Girl
- Domino Effekt

Special thanks to Cristian who I met post gig at Brisbane Zombie Walk.

The Domino Effekt album by Mallory Vanetti has not yet been officially launched, but pre-release copies are available through their website, and Facebook

Fourdoubleosix’s Jemma McCarthy chats to pop/rock darlings Kate, Tristan, Cristian, Kai and Mallory from Mallory Vanetti, about busking, family disputes and Taylor Swift.

Firstly, debut album Domino Effekt has just been released (congrats!). What was the process behind creating this album, and how much time went into getting the final product?

Aldo and I met way back in 2010, and started writing songs together. I would come to him with a melody and some lyrics, and he would create music around my ideas. Other times, Alan would have a complete song finished with no lyrics and I would write them into his music.
All up we wrote over 30 songs together, and only 11 made the cut.
The process was very fun, but testing at times. It was hard to go from 30 to 11, but we feel that the songs chosen for ‘Domino Effekt’ all have the same flow.
Our songs have quirks of uniqueness that keep you guessing ‘What’s next?’
All in all, it took two years for the finished product to be in my hands after photos, mastering and printing.

How exactly did Mallory Vanetti come together?

When I moved back to Brisbane two years ago (after living in Toowoomba for a few years while I was studying acting/singing), Aldo (an accomplished Scottish producer) found me on Facebook, and thus began our process of song writing.
Last year I met Kate through playing in a cover band. Kate was a guitarist who picked up the bass and just starting playing flawlessly. She is so talented and has the most amazing soft complimenting voice. I knew right away I wanted her to be in my live band.
We put some ads up through music sites asking for interest and there we found Tristan and Cristian, who are both amazingly talented musicians.
After a few drummers had come and gone, we met the amazing Kai who was just what we were looking for.
Everyone is so relaxed around each other; we are a little family now.

Your music has been described as a “musical roller coaster of pure emotion”. What difficulties (if any) have you faced getting to where you are now, and how did you overcome these?

I often wrote in my diary about my life and my trials and tribulations of relationships (I think I could give Taylor Swift a run for her money with bad relationships, haha). And then, these diary entries get turned into songs.
Each song is about a personal experience I have had in my life, be that with failed love, lost family connections or just people telling you that you’re not good enough.
I overcome battles everyday and I hope my songs can help my listeners know that they can too.

You have a reputation for working incredibly hard to write and record new tracks. How important is it to find balance between working and playing, and what do you find yourselves doing in your downtime?

Most of us have day jobs too. I admit, I get stressed sometimes because I’m sitting at work doing my job, and I constantly think, “Oh damn, I have to get this organised”, or “Oh, must call that person”, and “I need to play more.” But I never really have down time, my fun time is when I’m playing music and being around like-minded people.
I do have a little Siberian husky puppy who is always waiting for me at home though, who I love very dearly.

From watching your performances, it’s clear that you’re a very close band. How important is it to maintain your friendships, and have there ever been any conflicts of interest?

I think it’s very important for everyone to feel comfortable around each other. Our personalities really compliment each other, and we do have a lot of fun. Everyone has brilliant ideas and pitches in to help with everything we do.
We try and have nights out that have nothing to do with music, and get to know each other on a personal level too.
With every family there are disagreements, but nothing serious. Brother and sister banter is very normal and entertaining to watch.

You’ve recently started busking around the city, tell us a bit about this.

We wanted to maximize our exposure, and what better way to do that than busking? We had an audition in the middle of Queen St Mall in Brisbane to a massive crowd, and they loved it. We’re not busking for money, just for people to see our names, get interested and follow us on social media. There is so much talent bursting at the seams in Brisbane, and busking is just another way for us to get out there and get noticed.

What are some of your immediate goals for the future, and where do you see Mallory Vanetti five years from now?

Goals right now are to have our album launch in December, get a music video done and release a few singles from the album. Each song is so diverse and has a little story of its’ own.
When I write lyrics, I always have a film clip playing in my head as well, so I can’t wait to see these ideas come to life in a video.
We have some amazing merchandise being created by Jonathan Broom of Freedom Productions, and we hope to have some jewellery with our logo made. There are - Fourdoubleosix

"Mallory Vanetti - Domino Effket album review"

An energetic display of pop commercial ability, tied in with some enjoyable hooks and teen inspired angst.

Let’s face it the pop genre and endless radio anthems have become completely over-saturated in a modern musical setting. Regardless of the band’s relevance to make catchy songs and relate-able lyrics, there’s always some new and emerging act to make a claim at radio stardom. Mallory Venetti’s Domino Effekt ticks all the boxes of a successful pop release, unveils some tap along rhythms and more importantly can relate to its listeners at an immediate level. At the album’s core, there’s simply no denying that this band is brought together by it’s front-women, one look at the band’s photos gives you an impression of a strong female led studio band that focuses as much on the image as the music put onto a CD . Of course, the music is a female-charged powerhouse of dominant female croons, belts, middles and highs, contrasting enough to support the interest of the listener.

Mallory Vanetti cites influences from across the board, mostly in the names of P!nk, Evanescence and even the quirkiness of System Of A Down. At times, these influences come together to create the Domino Effekt sound, but mostly, Mallory Vanetti’s sound is an amalgamation of the fresh and home-grown angst, developed with a sense of uniqueness quite unlike the commercial radio atmosphere found on the radio scene today. So what does the album sound like? Well, take a percentage of P!nk, a dash of Evanescence, a striking of The Veronicas and something that is completely Mallory Venetti. It’s a combination that works well for the band and would work well in most live settings.

Despite all the positive seeping from this record, the album itself is far from flawless and would benefit from more attention to its production. In the studio the band has the essentials right, the vocals are up there and instantly in the listeners’ ears. Unfortunately, between the vocals and the snappy snare and bass guitar lines, the rest of the album is overshadowed and pushed to the back like a naughty student being isolated in class. For ‘Domino Effekt’ to make the best impact the mixing should have been a little more cohesive and even giving some more life to a ‘band’ effort instead of a one-woman vocal show.

Overall, Mallory Vanetti will grow and the next few years will highlight just how much potential this act has. The local scene is bolstered by this young and energetic group, with room to improve on the solid foundations they’ve set for themselves. With the title track standing as an instant highlight of the album, Mallory Vanetti show a depth to their song-writing that goes past the simple scat sounds and contextual motifs of relationship breakups. Domino Effekt is a fresh take on an over-populated radio inspired scene, regardless of the genre, Mallory can stand on its own and by its own rights. It’s not perfect, it was never be (just see the song ‘Perfect Girl’), but for the most part there is no denying just how enjoyable music like this can be.

3.6/5 - The Sonic Sensory

Bio

Once Upon A Time a little rock star was born. Her parents named her Mallory. She has always been a busy little Rock Star in the making. From the tender age of three she has been dancing, singing and acting for anyone who would watch or listen. Family and friends along the way would always encourage her to share her talents and so the dream began. One day she would be packing out stadiums, headlining performances traveling the world showcasing her art. One thing she knew was that she would look back on the journey and know this is where she belonged...ON STAGE.

Two years ago after returning to Brisbane after a stint in Toowoomba studying a Bachelor of Creative Arts in theatre and contemporary voice she met a man called Aldo J. Together they created her debut album, a musical masterpiece called 'Domino Effekt'.

Mallory is a front woman who engages the audience with her 'doom' eyes. The kind that hold a mysterious, seductive gaze. With a vocal delivery that will send shivers down your spine, her crazy wonderful personality drags you on board this musical roller coaster of pure emotion. Prepare to be enthralled with the heartfelt lyrics that offer a new twist on musical composition. Its time for the world to meet Mallory Vanetti, and she is so very excited to meet you all.

Now its time step out of the studio and onto the stage and bring Domino Effekt to life. Mallory has been busy building a live band. Amazingly talented Tristan Field on lead guitar, coming from a theatre background never ceases to amaze the audience with his energy. Cristian Corsini the Italian Stallion who is a wonderful songwriter is heavenly on guitar and rocker Kai Patch joins Vanetti on drums, never missing a beat.

Influenced by some great artists like No Doubt, Paramore, System of a Down & P!NK -

Mallory Vanetti has their eyes set on dominating 2013 & are already in the writing phase of album number two.
