Bio

In early 2008, fifteen-year-old Mallu Magalhães started her prolific career uploading four songs of her own to a MySpace page. In less than two months this page became a national hit in Brazil, with more than half a million plays, getting a lot of attention from both online and offline media. After that, she had great exposure all around the country, featuring in several popular TV Shows, and having her songs used to promote phones for “Motorola” and for “VIVO”, biggest mobile network operator company in Brazil.

Still in the same year, Mallu got together with world-class producer Mário Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys, Jack Johnson, Beck), to record her first album with 12 original songs. It became the first album released in Brazil sponsored by a telephone company, and featuring among the most important releases of the year without the support of any record label.

On her first album tour she featured as the new sensation in all of the major festivals in Brazil, including “Planeta Terra” (Headliners: The Offspring, Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party), and even reached big stages overseas, playing in “Sudoeste TMN” festival in Portugal (Headliners: Faith no More, Lilly Allen). This tour was registered in a DVD released independently, all in the first year of Mallu’s career.

In 2009, revealed as a growing artist and approaching 17, she became closer to the world of fashion, playing in fashion shows for important Brazilian brands such as “Ronaldo Fraga” and “Maria Bonita Extra”. This was also the year of the beginning of her relationship with Sony Music, with the release of her second album, which featured in the Rolling Stone’s list of best albums of the year. This album was also released digitally in the United States and Europe, and Mallu performed in Canada, Spain and Portugal.

After a long tour, she got back in the studio in 2011 to record her third album “Pitanga” with producer Marcelo Camelo, former leader of the band Los Hermanos, who wonderfully captured the soul of Mallu’s evolution in singing and songwriting, with songs with a fresh Brazilian feel, putting samba and bossa nova together with the folk/country style that made her famous in the first place, and with a mixture of Portuguese and English lyrics. Combined with the new sound of the album comes a new world of colorful, retro and gentle images, from the album cover to the first music video - “Velha e Louca”, that became the first music video in brazil released in movie theatres.

Since June 2012, Mallu is back on the road with the “Pitanga” tour, for which she already has great expectations, including a performance in this year’s Rock in Rio Lisboa.
