Mallu Magalhaes
With only 15 years old, Mallu Magalhaes had some songs written that only reached family and friends. Using some money received as birthday gift, she decided to go to a studio and record her songs. Some weeks later, songs are premiered at her Myspace page and from them on, a hype never experienced in Brazil before, take her name to all newspapers and magazines that matters.
Easy to understand is the fact that Mallu had something different. With a help of a 17 year old friend, she sat in the desk of every single major label in Brazil, with her head still on the right place she took the decision of record her debut album, the choice of the producer was more than inspired: Mario Caldato. Caldato was the right person to understand Mallu’s world, with both international (produced albuns by Beastie Boys and Super Furry Animals among others) and brazilian experience, alied with modern and vintage asthetic, the choice was a nobrainer. Located in Rio, the studio was pick because of a soundesk from 60’s(that used to belong to EMI), was used to reach the right balance.
Record ready, the next radical decision: go independent. Instead of sign with a label, Mallu and her management decided to handle their own affairs, quickly a deal with a mobile company helped to achieve the plans. They took care of digital downloads and phone sets with her music pre-loaded, and a month later the physical release reach the shops... was the first time that a strategy like this happened in Brazil.
When was time to tour, Mallu acted as a brave veteran and without a blink, played in every festival that matters in Brazil, gathering national press and aparences in all TV shows. Quite soon she was the most important independent artist in Brazil, but also courted by all major artists that saw in Mallu Magalhaes the right way to condut a carrer. For a 16 year old, singing in english in a country where the market is dominated by domestic artists singing in portuguese, she was brave enough to prove her point of being modern, but with a vintage feel.
Right now Mallu prepare for her international launch. A tour in US, Europe and Japan is being planned right now, as well the release of her album.
