"Mama Knocked 'Em Out - Cutsworth Reigns Supreme"

CKUW DJ Mama Cutsworth managed to blow minds with her debut at the Clash of the Titans by eclipsing 2005 champion DJ Hunnicutt and becoming queen of Winnipeg's sounds.

Emerging from a pool of talent that included DJs Hunnicutt, Co-op, B-Mac, Hipnotic, @Large, Spitz and D-Lo, and Combo, Mama knocked them all out with her 15-minute set. A wall-to-wall crowd inside the Collective ate up her performance, which happened to include a female 'ninja' to complement her own "Strictly for my Ninjas" T--shirt. Immediately after Cutsworth's set, the buzz inside the venue said she was the one to beat.

Though relatively new to the party circuit, Mama don't make no mess. She's been actively involved int he local music scene as the editor of Stylus and as a staff member and on-air personality on CKUW for a minute now. As a DJ, she had already played at events such as Serendipity 2, the Somebody Need A Time Out CD release party, last year's Pride Cabaret and Harvest Moon Festival, and Co-op and Hunnicutt's Disco Fever 2 party. She threw her first shaker, the Sugar Dance Party, in fall 2005 at the Graffiti Gallery.

Not content with vinyl and print pursuits, this jazz- and classically trained soprano is also signed to Balanced Records and has appeared on fascade@137db's Character of the Moment and the Northern Faction 3 compilation. She'll be featured on Solidaze's upcoming Pleasure From Precision.

"The Heat Is On - Show Preview"

Mama Cutsworth and Mizz Brown @ The Rocker

It's totally common to see ladies on the dance floor, but in the DJ booth? Not so much. Thankfully, Winnipeg boasts enough DJs of the fairer sex to fill a theme night; in this case, the sure-to-be-groovy "She's The DJ, I'm the DJ" throwdown hosted by Mama Cutsworth and Mizz Brown. Both are obsessive vinyl fiends, so expect to hear everything from gritty funk and gut-busting soul to old-school hip-hop and infectious Latin. - The Winnipeg Sun, July 26 2007

Bio

You couldn't ask for more passionate people.

Mama Cutsworth and Mizz Brown are both fiendish record collectors and they’re obsessed with making people dance to hot music.

Years ago the two women met at a campus radio station; one was doing a feminist news program, the other, a show about old school funk and Motown. They’ve been playing music together ever since. When you see these two play together, don’t be surprised to hear Reggae remixes of classic Motown tunes, Afrobeat mashed up with swing, or blues samples overtop salsa music. These two are outta control!

One of the leading DJs on the Canadian prairies, MAMA CUTSWORTH has shared the stage with Kinnie Starr, MEN (JD and Jo of Le Tigre), DJ Hunnicutt and Co-op, DJ Champion, and more. This coming March, she’ll be rocking parties to thousands of people in both Vancouver and Whistler for the 2010 Paralympics. In 2006, Cutsworth became the first and only female competitor in the annual DJ battle, Clash of the Titans. She took home the first place title, winning over the crowd with both a dance routine AND a ninja. More recently, she flew half way across Canada to play the International Women’s Film Festival in Newfoundland and hopped a train to Chicago to play the women’s music festival, Decibelle, with her DJ partner Mizz Brown.

MIZZ BROWN’s heart lies in experimenting with musical genres that were born decades apart from each other. It’s all about hip hop, reggae and funk beats blended with classic vintage vocals - Nina Simone, Bessie Smith and Aretha Franklin all find their way into the mix. Besides her love for blues and jazz, her repertoire usually includes a great deal of music with African and South American roots; her DJ sets are always a melting pot of danceable tunes to make you sweat. Recently, she has been heating up the dance floor at Toronto’s Augusta House, The Legion, Dovercourt House, and The Garrison. This past summer she opened for Alice Russell at the 2009 Jazz Winnipeg Festival as well as gigging in Chicago with her pal Mama Cutsworth.
