Perkussive Manie und poppige Streicher setzten sich bei den diesjährigen Austrian World Music Awards durch: Beim Abschlusskonzert desWettbewerbs am Sonntagabend im
Wiener Porgy & Bess entschied sich die achtköpfige Jury für Mamadou Diabate's Percussion Mania, die den mit 2.500 Euro dotierten Hauptpreis entgegennehmen durften.
Der Förderpreis (1.500 Euro) ging an das Streicher-Duo Catch-Pop String-Strong, für den Publikumspreis erhielt die Formation Federspiel ein Funk-Mikrofon, wie es heute in einer Aussendung hieß.
Insgesamt bewarben sich bei der diesjährigen Ausgabe desWettbewerbs 111 Musiker und Gruppen. Ins Finale der vom Internationalen Kultur- und Kommunikationszentrum
organisierten Veranstaltung schafften es schließlich sechs Bands, die sich bei der Vorausscheidung am 14. November durchsetzen konnten. Bereits vor dem Finale stand der diesjährige Empfänger des Ehrenpreises fest: der Akkordeonist Jovica Petkovic. Zu
den bisherigen Gewinnern des seit 2003 veranstalteten Wettbewerbs zählen u.a. die Zwei -Mann-Kapelle Die Strottern, Troica oder Martin Lubenov's Jazzta Prasta.

Bio
Mamadou Diabate was born into a traditional musician-family in Burkina Faso (West Africa). At the age of 5 he started his professional training. At 8 he began with his apprenticeship years with renowned balafonists of neighboring peoples.
In 1985 and 1998 he won the first prize of the National Balafon Competition of Burkina Faso.
He currently lives in Austria.
With his group Percussion Mania he won the Austrian World Music Award (2011) and the Grand Prix of the "Triangle du Balafon" Competition in Mali (2012). For his virtuosity, he was there also honored with the "Prix Alkaly Camara de la virtuosité".
He has released 9 CDs with his own compositions and 2 others with authentic music of the Sambla and Tusia peoples (both world premiere).
In Burkina Faso, he had built a primary school where poor children are taught free of charge.
