MAMA SOL & THA N.U.T.S

There's a few ways to hear out some of the local spoken word artists performing around town this month.

Not only can you hear the poetic passion of musical artists from the area, but these events are easy on the wallet.

Buckham Gallery will host “Women About Men,” a spoken word event, from 6:30-9 p.m. Friday.

This event features women artists sharing personal stories and poetry about men.

Admission is free and includes door prizes, open mic and food.

The "Bring It" Music Festival takes to Kearsley Park this weekend and from 8:30-9:15 p.m., guests can hear Flint spoken word artist known as "Mama SOL" perform with her band The N.U.T.S.

Admission to the Bring It Fest is free.

Buckham Gallery will also hold an open mic night 6-9 p.m. Saturday for local poets, rap artists and spoken-word performers.

The event will include an in-house DJ, too.

Stop by the Flint Farmers' Market from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Oct. 1 to hear Mama SOL and Tha N.U.T.S. performing again.

Mindy "Sol" Wilson, Flint native, performer and humanitarian, will perform at Churchill's Food & Spirits Wednesday to raise awareness about breast cancer.

As a breast cancer survivor herself, "Mama Sol" will headline with her band, Tha N.U.T.S., for the public awareness show at 9 p.m. Oct. 19. The cover charge is $5 for 21 and up or $7 for guests under 21.

Mama Sol says she feels compelled to "celebrate that victory," by speaking out at the event.

If you are looking for someone offering something new to the Hip-Hop scene, Mama Sol and Tha N.U.T.S. may be what you are looking for. Hailing from Flint, MI, Mama Sol is a MC delivering her message to you through her smooth lyrical yet poetic flow and music by her live band Tha N.U.T.S. Yes, that’s right…I said live band! Together Mama Sol and Tha N.U.T.S. combine to give the audience a great live show.

Mama Sol’s latest project is titled Dreamgirl Tha Fix-Tape. On Dreamgirl you can find motivational songs such as “High Self-Esteem”, where she speaks on self-awareness and believing in yourself to do whatever it is that you are trying to accomplish, “Super Supreme,” which she uses the platform about chasing dreams. “Beauty N The Beast,” gets personal in describing her background and upbringing. Sprinkled throughout there are freestyles on songs such as Drake’s “Forever Mine”, Jay-Z’s “A Star Is Born”, and Rick Ross’ Maybach Music titled “No Maybach Music.” The tape def has a variety that all can enjoy.

I spoke with Mama Sol to discuss Dreamgirl, her trip to Africa, and rocking the stage with the legendary Rakim.

Lita: Dreamgirl is officially out what is it that you would like people to know about the project?
Mama Sol: For me being in a male dominated industry I just want to let all girls know that they can live their dreams, and that is where I got the title Dreamgirl from.

Lita: What would you say makes this project different than other mixtapes out?
Mama Sol: Majority of the music that is on my album are original pieces. The only reason I did the few freestyles was because I wanted to show that I could be a feature on those certain songs. Actually it was called a fix-tape because we wanted to fix the game by being original. We won’t flood you with what everybody else is doing we are going to do our own thing!

Lita: You recently went to Africa what was the purpose of the trip?
Mama Sol: I was the first Hip-Hop artist from the United States to visit the refugee camps. So the purpose of the trip was for me to witness what was going on with the famine and drought and come back to the States and be a voice. As an artist I wanted to be able to see what was going on and what it was that I could do to contribute in helping the situation.

Lita: Is Hip-Hop big over in Africa?
Mama Sol: Mos def. Hip-Hop is big there. They have small passenger vans that they even painted with Tupac and other artists. The radio stations play what majority of our stations play. They have a local station where they have their own Hip-Hop artists performing similar to 106 & Park that we have here.

Lita: Upon your return to the states you opened for the legendary Rakim. How did that happen?
Mama Sol: The National Urban League had a Cultural Festival last year and we opened for Kindred The Family Soul. We got good reviews last year, and this year the people requested us to open for him, and of course we took the opportunity! (laughs)

Lita: I know that had to be a great experience! Did Rakim drop any knowledge on you?
Mama Sol: Yep we chopped it up after the set. He was really impressed by my travels, because he said there are a lot of people that wouldn’t have traveled to Africa during their rough times. He kept giving me praise for what I’ve done. He told me to keep going and just stay at it! I got a lot of encouragement. He told me I’m the perfect person to represent the image for the women in Hip-Hop.

Lita: Any new projects, appearances, news or anything that you would like to share with the readers?
Mama Sol: I have to yet do a release party for the project so that will be coming soon. I have another project coming out though I’m still trying to come up with a name for it. We will go back to Africa in November for four concerts. For those in Flint, MI we will be performing at the Art of Hip-Hop August 27th. So there will be plenty going on for us.
