During the summer of 2009, Manicato began working on their full-length debut album, Familia under the direction of producer Greg Landau (Maldita Vecindad, Susana Baca, Patato Valdes, Quetzal, Omar Sosa), four-time Grammy Award nominee. Recording first at Faultline Studios, tracking was completed in the Winter of 2009 at Landau’s Patio de Oshun Studios in the Bernal Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. The CD was mixed and mastered by Grammy Award winning engineer, John Greenham (Los Tigres del Norte, Omar Sosa, Queensryche), at 1030 Mission Street Studios in January 2010.
Described as uplifting, peace-full, passionate, and powerful, Manicato has been headlining local clubs and festivals from the West Coast to Miami, uplifting dancers in the Latin communities to the alternative festivals and world music mash-ups up. Manicato means “a bold and valiant person of a good heart,” a word derived from The Taino, a native people of Puerto Rico. The Familia CD includes a modern plena, Plena pa’l Mundo, a hard hitting contribution to the new revival of this form of Puerto Rican street music that is considered the “periodico cantado”, or musical diary of the Puerto Rican community on the island and the diaspora. Other songs fuse roots reggae with intense Latin grooves echoing the Latin American evolution, such Bailadora, Familia y Boriken, which is probably the first reggae song to use Puerto Rico’s national instrument, the cuatro. Manicato’s lyrics, written by father and son, Cris and Israel Matos, trace the concerns of Latinos living in the United States, an existential search for identity and purpose in this new globalized consumer society. This CD traces this search for roots and a means of bringing to light the pressing issues that face humanity in these times of crisis.
Manicato’s Familia with its mixture of Latin Reggae, Salsa, Timba, Plena, and Funk is was released in June 2010 in Miami and San Francisco.

Founded in SF’s Mission district in 2005 by Israel Matos, Manicato has found a way to combine its social and musical influences into a hard-hitting form of intelligent dance music that feeds both body and mind. They have most recently opened for Ozomatli and Locura and are slated to open for Cultura Profectica in the near future.

Manicato, started with Israel Matos jamming with a diverse group of young musicians in a Mission District garage forging a Latin Reggae, Rock sound that incorporates the wealth of music they hear reverberating around them from all over Latin America, the Caribbean and San Francisco. Later they recruit Israel’s father, the noted, Cris Matos, sonero, to add his rich, authentic Puerto Rican vocal sound to this unique blend, grounding it in a firmly rooted traditional sound.
The band features a powerful horn section, Danny Cao and Alan "Trombon" Williams, that builds nuanced lines merging modern and traditional styles with unexpected twists of funk and rock, while staying true to Latin rhythms and influence. Familia offers an original feast of Latin Reggae, Salsa, Timba, Plena, Funk--and Rock en Español, nourishing the mind, body, and soul, challenging even the most shy of listeners to remain seated.
The word Manicato, derived from the Native People of Puerto Rico known as The Taino, means a bold and valiant person of a good heart. The band Manicato lives up to this Taino ideal with it’s socially conscious lyrics backed by a mixture of Salsa, Timba, Reggae, Hip Hop, and Rock . Featuring one of the only father and son vocal sections in the city, hard hitting horn lines, and a rythm section that will inspire you to dance, Manicato will have you speaking in one of the oldest languages, the universal language of music, feeding your mind, body, and soul.
