"Manikinpublik: Track of the Week"

St. John's-based Justin Merdsoy
is often hidden behind the scenes producing
but when he steps to the forefront he serves up a serious blend
of rock-laced power-pop. His solo work has found a home
in high rotation on my playlist and he is sure to stay
there a while yet -- thanks to his new musical venture.
Merdsoy has teamed up with his brother Luke,
Brad Wheeler, Brad Madden and Sheilagh Hanley
to form Manikinpublik.

The group is set to make its debut at The Republic
on Saturday, February 3. And that's reason enough
to make a great track like, Threat of Rain
the Product of Newfoundland
Track of the Week.

June 2007 released our first six track EP entitled "bliateral". Four of the six songs are streamed through our myspace website.

Manikinpublik began in the fall of 2006 as a collaboration between brothers Justin and Luke Merdsoy. As independent songwriters, they had often drawn from one another for inspiration and critique. When opportunity found the two living in the same city, it wasn't long before they decided to take the stage together. Joining forces with three other talented musicians, Manikinpublik came to life.
Laying infectious beats is the multi-talented Percussionist, Brad Wheeler. Brad's years of playing in rhythm driven funk and ska bands lends an unmistakable depth and groove to the music. Holding down the low end with driving and melodic basslines is the four string phenomenon, Brad Madden. An experienced performer, Brad delivers a resonating fundamental that glues it all together. And, on Keyboards, is the classically trained Sheilagh Hanley. From staccato piano to ethereal strings, Sheilagh fills out the sound and takes the intensity to a whole new level.
With all five members in sync, the sound of Manikinpublik is lush and energetic and the intensity is undeniable. Incorporating driving rhythms and hook laden melodies reminiscent of early U2 with musical intelligence and theatrical poise not unlike upbeat Radiohead. Lyrically intelligent and musically diverse, it is a sound that wants to be heard again and again.
In June 2007, the EP "bilateral" was released and support began with an eight-show tour that spanned the urban and rural watering holes of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.
