"The People have spoken- Man Made Lake Club 919's favourite emerging artist"

Club 9ONE9’s Favourite Emerging Artist

Winner: Man Made Lake

Man Made Lake made their start some years ago in communist China and since they’ve been back on Canadian soil and acquired some new members, they’re making their mark on the indie-rock scene here in Victoria. They released a new EP Strong Man in 2011, which is available for download on their bandcamp page.

Runners Up: A three-way tie between SYN{A}PSE, Georgia Murray and Bonehoof.

"Man Made Lake CD release"

The men from MAN MADE LAKE has finally released an album this past Saturday called “Murky Waters.” I’m crushing on their new song, “Bourbon” as it is the only track on the album that has a 1920s feel to it that transports you back in time — whereas the rest of the album is more indie/rock and just as amazing!

"Man Made Lake"

Man Made Lake are a local band with a very foreign beginning. While most locals bands get their start in high schools in Kelowna or mothers basements, Man Made Lake had the pleasure of getting their band off the ground in China, when three of its core members all left Victoria to teach English. While in China they met a local punk rocker by the name of Wu Wei that introduced them to their future drummer Lao Song. From there they began playing gigs in town and thus the early makings of the current Man Made Lake were born.

The move back to the island city of Victoria left almost back at square one, having left drummer Song, and guitarist Sean Morton behind they found themselves looking for new band mates. They have now rounded out to a 6-piece playing softer melodies with very aesthetic compositions.

Man Made Lake - Strong Man

EP: Strong Man [2011]
a quick search on the internet did not return many results for canadian Man Made Lake.
The 6-piece band began in Communist China, only to be reformed upon their return to Canada.
They had their self-titled sophomore released last year, and in early 2011 Strong Man EP arrived.
Folk in a rock sense. lyrical and intimate, but with a warm strength clearly implied.

"New Rock Records: Man Made Lake’s New EP"

Under unusual circumstances, Man Made Lake became a band. Read their story and catch a clip.

Though the band was formed while the players were in high school, it took three of them landing in Communist China at the same time for Man Made Lake to become a reality. It was there that singer Colin Craveiro, keyboardist Nate Bailey and one-time guitarist Cole Wadley path’s crossed again, where all three were working as kindergarten teachers. With the addition of local drummer Lao Song, the band was complete.

After a year of playing China and a hiatus for travel, MML reconvened in Vancouver, BC to cut their a couple of albums: 2009's Drink From The Sea and 2010's self-titled effort. Now, with a number of impressive opening spots and a couple of albums under their belts, Man Made Lake have a new EP on their own label coming out April 1.

Check a live cut of “Who Came Back” and then learn more at their MySpace and their web pages.

Bio

o Man Made Lake
Conceived just out of high school, mutating numerous times under various personas, Man Made Lake erupted for the first time in the non-typical setting of Communist China. After creating a large following in Wuhan while teaching English, front-man Colin Craveiro and keyboardist Nate Bailey returned back home to Victoria BC to reform the band with a new sound and a new lineup to include Brent Gosse on keys, guitarists John Flatman and Steve Parker, Morgan Hradecky on Drums, and Riley Smith on bass. Playing the 2011 Rifflandia festival and some of Victoria’s best live music venues this past year, Man Made Lake has created a loyal following in a very short time. With meaningful lyrics and haunting melodies, each song is unique from the next providing the listener with a varied landscape of visual sound. Their new album entitled ‘Murky Waters’ was recently released at their sold out CD release party in Victoria. The band looks forward to playing more festivals this year as well as planning a tour.
