"From heaven? Helsinki actually."

Manna Mariam Jantti has a bloodline guaranteed to cause headaches at her passport office: born in Paris, half Finnish, half-Algerian and after a peripatetic childhood now finally settled in Helsinki.

You could be forgiven for thinking there's a whole lot of No Wave New York in there too, given the narcotic Patti Smith-like grooves of the terrific Truth Song and Holy Dirty Game. But that's only part of the story. Her magpie instincts make room for 60s girl group pop, highly atmospheric ballads and the kind of hoodoo vamp rock that's been bubbling up from the basement since kids first learned to plug in a guitar.

She's a genuine talent alright capable of both Ronette's dreaminess (It Only Hurts For A While) and riffs that Royal Trux last rode in on (Rollercoaster).

There's killer attitude too : 'Sweet baby it's plain to see/ Quite frankly you've got nothing for me'.

Sounds Like MUSIC MEDIA COMMENTS:
MOJO MAGAZINE LIVE REVIEW:
"Striking is Manna, looking like a cross between Charlotte Gainsbourg and Patti Smith. Blending PJ Harvey's stomp with CSS's dance moves is audacious, and it's clear she's ready to cross borders. Her extraordinary bassist Maria nailed a constant pulse that gripped the audience."

SUNDAY TIMES CULTURE:
Hottest Download: Manna! Dreamy doomy music from Algerian/Finnish newcomer.

MTV.UK:
Manna sits in that space between early 60s girl groups and New York new wave that’s kind of popular again. Not that we’re complaining. We’ll file it next to the new Raveonettes album.

"Her stage presence makes her shine, in the way that two years from now when she’s headlining a show at a stadium the size of a small city, I’ll be like…well at least I called the stage presence thing. She’s got the kind of star power that makes me feel like a sleazy record executive that actually says things like “star power.”

RELEASE OF THE WEEK:

"Manna, Born in Paris to a Finnish mother and an Algerian father, was never going to be anything other than fu**ing cool. Channelling Debbie Harry, she has it all: tambourine shakes; a who-gives-a-toss throwaway philosophy and a pop meets rock filth bag garage sound. **** "

"NEW BAND DAILY"

"Think of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Sounds, but this time, hitting the right notes solo. Each of her songs is a refreshing, intense, and honest piece of lyrical and instrumental experimentation. It seems as though calling on musical history with a modern twist has paid of with killer reviews in the UK and in Finland. It will be no surprise if and when Manna's music starts becoming a global hit."

"ILIKEMUSIC.CO.UK"

"Truth Song, is an utterly honest to the core rock song, think of aggressive punky repetitive guitars, stripped down verses building towards melodic, layered and even ethereal refrains. Exhibits perfectly the flexibility, vulnerability and the true star quality of Manna. "

Bio

Mariam "Manna" Jäntti, born in Paris to a Finnish mother and an Algerian father, now based in Helsinki Finland, she has been releasing music at home since 2008.

Following the UK/Finnish release of Manna’s critically acclaimed album: Songs Of Hope And Desire in early 2010, Manna has been working on new material and will be recording with acclaimed producer Alain Johannes (Artic Monkeys, QOTSA, Eleven, No Doubt) in spring 2011 for the release of a new album in Autumn 2011.

Mixing influences that pass decades, Manna effortlessly combines musical elements from punk rock to dreamy folk creating, a unique and powerful sound. She has already garnered great attention among the UK press and industry and she's already picked up by the likes of Mojo, The Sunday Times Culture, Q magazine, Record of The Day, MTV UK, Classic Rock Magazine, and Myspace editorial.

MUSE,selected Manna to support the band in Finland in the summer of 2010, and in December 2010, she was personally selected by Melissa auf der Maur to be main support on her Scandinavian tour.

In 2010, under her belt rave reviewed appearances at the biggest showcase festivals in Europe: Eurosonic and By:Larm, a UK tour with shows at Club NME, and performances at The Great Escape and Secret Garden Party Festivals.

In Manna's own words: " I am not interested in creating anything except heartfelt music, it can be either beautiful or just plain aggressive - often both. I grew up listening as much folk, soul and blues music than I loved the early New York punk scene bands. Anyway, there should be no rules when it comes to making music, it's when you let go of them and follow your intuition that it starts getting interesting. Sound is god and I love music."
