"Moovers and Shakers 2005"

Backbeat scribes weigh in on their favorite new releases from the past year.
Published: Thursday, December 22, 2005

Various Artists, Still Soft (Still Soft). In the market for polished songwriting, perfect pitch and careerist pretension? Look elsewhere than this collection of energetic, imaginative underground acts. The high points: Pee Pee's drunken country stagger, Little Paia's folk-dosed dementia, teamAWESOME's bratty booty punk, Mannequin Makeout's synth-and-sylph assault and Transistor Radio Sound's brittle, electro-acoustic pop. The low point: It's over way too quickly. -- Heller - Westword

"Your New Year's plans"

Published: December 23, 2005

Dec. 31 bash for every partyer

New Year's Eve is just around the corner, and the events are already filling up. If you haven't made plans yet, don't worry. There are plenty of options to choose from. Here are a few ideas; next week check back for a full listing...

Music snobs and indie hipsters will gather at the grand reopening of the Oriental Theater at West 44th Avenue and Tennyson Street in northwest Denver. Local favorite DeVotchKa will perform in the newly remodeled theater, along with Mannequin Makeout, Porlolo and December Question. --Kat Valentine - Denver Post

"Mannequin Makeout w/Stab!Heart!Kiss!Kill!"

Published May 18, 2006

The split seven-inch single is a punk tradition as old as crappy 'zines and cheap beer. Boulder's Mannequin Makeout and Denver's Stab!Heart!Kiss!Kill! know the drill: They'll assault the stage at the Climax to commemorate the release of a new split single on local imprint Not Bad World Industires. MM specializes in coed, keyboard-bashed dance riots, while SHKK has a Death From Above 1979-with-a-lobotomy shtick that seethes with feedback and contorted lust. The show kicks off a Mannequin Makeout tour, so there's bound to be some farewell tears mixed in with all the broken teeth. - The Onion

"6th Annual Best of the Underground"

Ranked 24th best band in Colorado out of over 200 bands.

Colorado's best underground bands, as voted by 49 local-music experts and selected citizens who considered 219 bands and voted 1 through 20, with 20 points awarded for first, 19 for second, 18 for third, etc.

"Compilations Deliver the Goods"

Various Artists, "Still Soft Recordings: Denver, Compilation Two"

INDIE ROCK|Still Soft, released recently

It's easy to eat up local music compilations like candy, but the best comps are the ones that offer something new, the ones that surprise you and introduce you to your new favorite band - or your old favorite band's side project.

And that's what is so exciting about this comp from the local Still Soft crew. The collective's roots are tangled throughout Mannequin Makeout (who contribute "Russian Soiree" here) and its multitalented members, but as this 18-track disc proves, the goodness doesn't stop there.

Transistor Radio Sound's "Ocean (Dub)" adorably picks around like Jonathan Richman on his first experimentation with a sampler. Tudaloos are equally obsessed with basic electronic sounds, only their vocals are vivid and full of celebratory, foot-tapping life. Action Packed Thrill Ride's "2 Dreams" is a back-porch mystery that toys with volume as much it does your imagination.

And other tracks from Kissing Party, Married in Berdichev!, Pee Pee and Drunk Bears only leave you wanting more, which is the primary reason for compilations. Mission accomplished, kids.

"Critic's Choice"

Published: January 27, 2005

"When Cammie O'Nassis of Mannequin Makeout squeals, "Dance mania! Dance mania!," you'd better believe it. The coed Boulder outfit injects urgency and fun into rigid dance punk, discarding slick beats and airtight production for a raw, rabid sound that scrapes grease off the garage floor and favors clunky Casios and serrated static over hi-tech precision. The group's four-song demo -- available at www.mannequinmakeout.com -- is as jerky and cast in plastic as its name implies; like the Gossip and Lost Sounds hopping aboard Gravy Train, O'Nassis and her crew know how to incite a crowd to locomotion. Mannequin Makeout will be on display at the Bluebird Theater on Friday, January 28, with Matson Jones and Le Boom. Pucker up."
-Jason Heller - Westword

"Metal Meltdown"

A newcomer to the Boulder music scene, Mannequin Makeout has already proven to be a welcome slap in the face for a drowsy world.

With a frenzied stage show and a repertoire of addictive disco-punk outbursts in tow, MM has kids young and old scrambling for their once neglected dancing shoes. Fronted by the ever enigmatic O'Nassis sisters Camy and Cassie (vox and keys), and aided by the enrollment of Statutory Nate, Gregory 6ix, and Oslo McMAN (guitar, bass, drums), Mannequin Makeout is the calling - ready to finally deliver the masses back to the dance floor where they belong. - Colorado Daily

"Pabst Blue Ribbon & the Onion Present"

Live and Local
Published: July 2005

Only a year old, Mannequin Makeout has already begun to command some attention. The Boulder based band combines punk, disco, and just enough insanity to provide an entertaining and energizing live show that will leave you covered in sweat and wishing you hadn’t traded in your dancing shoes. Their first E.P. is still in the works, but expect its release within the next several months. Mannequin Makeout will be playing at the Hi-Dive Saturday, July 9.

"Best of Denver"

BEST ROCK COMPILATION
Cuvee 3 - Various Artists
Published: May 23, 2006

At first glance, it looks like Boulder-based Adventure Records made some pretty lazy choices for its Cuvee 3 compilation... But between all of these heavy-hitters -- none of which contributes exclusive songs -- are more obscure local acts that sparkle like unearthed gems. Among the highlights are tracks by ...the seizure-inducing Mannequin Makeout... Ultimately, Cuvee 3 is a real mixed bag, but that's what makes it a great local comp: It draws you in with the obvious, then blows your mind with some left-field risks and pleasant surprises. - Westword

Bio

Since their inception in May of 2004, Mannequin Makeout has exploded on to the Denver music scene. With quite a sufficient buzz growing around their live shows, they have attracted a large and sexy fan base. Ranked 24 out of over 200 bands by the Denver Post in just two years of existence, Mannequin Makeout has already played to crowds of over 500. Live shows are erratic, exciting, and very interactive. They have shared the stage with national touring acts such as Of Montreal, Glass Candy and the Shattered Theater, Devotchka, Numbers, Man Man, Minus the Bear, Mommy and Daddy, Shychild, the Advantage, Kid606, and Supersystem (formerly El Guapo), among many others, and are now ready to smash into the national scene.

In November of 2005, Mannequin Makeout began giving back to Denver musicians when frontwoman Brittany Gould and Nick Houde, of Transistor Radio Sound, launched Still Soft Recordings. Still Soft Recordings is a D.I.Y., home-based record label focused on hand making releases and promoting creativity among peers and was awarded "Denver's Best D.I.Y. Label" by Westword, Denver's premiere independent news magazine, in 2006, and was recently featured in the Winter 2006 issue of Skyscraper magazine.
