Bio

One of the biggest revelations of last year are already back with a new album, barely even giving us time to react to their first. What would Manos de Topo do to follow up their acclaimed Ortopedias Bonitas (Beautiful Orthopaedics)? That was the question on everyone’s lips and El Primero Era Mejor (The First One Was Better) is the title they have chosen in response. A year and a half ago they presented their first album – a collection of unlucky-in-love songs which they have since performed live on numerous stages (including many festivals such as FIB, Primavera Sound, South Pop, Día de la Música, Festival de Cine de Gijón...) and had translated into other languages (have a look at the excellent videoclips which Kike Maillo directed for them, or the graphic literary experiment recently edited by Chuso Ordi and published by Morsa Editorial). A lot has been said about their lyrics, their songs and about the voice of Miguel Ángel Blanca. Luckily, and confounding expectations, many people have understood that behind Manos de Topo’s lo-fi loser attitude is a band who are so sure of themselves that they dare to bare themselves each step of the way, who have nothing to hide or be ashamed of.
Manos de Topo enjoy wallowing in the heartaches and misfortunes of love, but they always keep the door open to irony and never stop delivering tough truths like punches. Lyrical gems like “follar provoca cariño” “fucking induces affection” are what they excel at. That’s why their albums contain everything that you ever wanted to say to your ex girlfriend or boyfriend but never dared. To conclude, El Primero Era Mejor, is nothing less than a great and inspired collection of reproaches to all kinds of wicked girls: the ones whose lips are cracked from laughing at you so much, the ones who are only attractive in profile, the anti-Darwinists, the ones who only dance with the bald guys at the prom, Eva Sannum and all those who say you have to experience being blonde at least once. They’re all so cruel.
In 2010, their albums are going to be realized in Mexico and the band plans to cross the ocean and tour around South America.
