Bio
a couple d.i.y., grunge-bred Eastern Washington yokels:
Guitarist/Vocalist Sam Tsohonis, 31, is a cross between Jack Black and Corky from the 80s tv show Life Goes On, but with hair like Roger Daltry’s. He suffers from undiagnosed but often-insinuated asperger’s syndrome. His guitar sound is big. His vocals are maybe bigger.
Drummer Kris Folkins, 34, blends a love of early punk, indy rock, and metal with a secret worship of alt-country and bossa nova, and really works up some unique rhythmic contexts to bring out the most of Tsohonis's sometimes-odd songwriting style.
Manual Tranny is an impressive live show. Between Tsohonis's hair, his homemade guitar (a self-described freak of nature) and his spastic performance style, he is a little much alone onstage. Luckily, Folkins plays a mean deadpan –creating a kind of good cop-bad cop dynamic that keeps audiences wondering and wanting...
Influences include Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Sebadoh, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Melvins, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Ruby Doe, Mars Volta, Hot Snakes, Unwound, Tortoise, The Ex, the Who, the Dead, Zeppelin, Floyd, Coltrane, Miles, Beethoven...
