"Dance Company On Tour"

Burlington's professional dance company, Maple Sugar, is on the move again.
The local all-female quintet is traversing Ontario for its summer tour with a stop in its hometown along the way.

Recently performing at the Sound of Music Festival, the dance group will be making 11 stops in Ontario, including Colborne, Port Rowan and Mount Forest.

The dancers will also be performing at Burlington's Children's Festival on Sunday, August 17 in Spencer Smith Park.

Founded in 2006 by Jolanta Oko, Maple Sugar performs hip hop and jazz routines with popular modern music.

"Maple Sugar Is Sweet On Performing"

OK, Canada, a quick quiz, courtesy of Jolanta Oko. Name a famous dancer. A Canadian one, if you can.
If ballerina Karen Kain, who retired in 1997, is the only name that comes to mind, Oko is determined to add to that minuscule list. (Incidentally, Kain was and still is Oko's icon, especially after studying at, and graduating from, the National Ballet School, where Kain was her teacher.)

The 28-year-old professional dancer -- who teaches French at an Oakville school by day with the Halton Catholic District School Board -- is the manager, dancer and director of the Maple Sugar Dance Company, which she formed in 2006.

Since then, Oko has methodically rooted out dancers of high calibre living throughout the region, to rehearse and perform evenings and weekends with her in Maple Sugar.

In just over one year she and her fellow female dancers have been cutting the rug at sports events and community festivals, such as the city's New Year's Eve celebration and Hamilton's Winterfest, as well as fronting bands such as Bedouin Soundclash, Metric and Wintersleep.

"Dancers don't get the recognition they deserve as much as other artists like painters and singers do," said Oko. "It is time for professional dancers to be recognized by name for their work." And that means taking centre stage, not in the background or on the sidelines, but featured along with other artists.

She admits it's a field in which it's almost impossible to make a living, but dance is her passion.

Through her years of earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance at York University, Oko was a cheerleader for the Hamilton Tiger Cats football club between 2000-2002, and then moved to the sidelines of the Toronto Argonaut's from 2002-2004.

While she took lessons at the same dance studio from the age of five until she was 18, it wasn't until she stood in front of the Hamilton football crowd that she realized the thrill of performing.

Finding more opportunities to capture that same excitement has been on Oko's agenda for the past year, and she's keen to do the same for other audience-starved dancers. Auditions for the all-female Maple Sugar Dance Company are held twice each year. A junior dance company gives similar opportunities to dancers, gymnasts and cheerleaders aged 7-14.

Bio

We are a professional dance group that is fighting the uphill battle to convince events and festivals that a professional dance company should be treated as does a professional main stage band.

Maple Sugar has toured acorss Ontario last summer doing just that...performing on the Main Stage between band sets...showing that the art of dance and dancers should be recognized for thier art form as do bands. We look forward to festivals helping support the art of dance in up and coming shows, with Maple Sugar on the main stage list of performers.

Our summer tour schedule fills up extremely quickly as we had over 12 stops across Ontario last summer, which had us travelling every weekend through June-August!

Maple Sugar continues to be at the fore front of dance entertainment in Canada . After traveling across Ontario last summer for our first summer tour we have added a few more popular Canadian musical artists names to our already impressive line ups which include Stars, Marc Ekins in addition to Bedouin Soundclash, Metric and Wintersleep. The following is a review from one of the event coordinators.

We provide exciting family friendly main stage entertainment. We continue to bring excitment, fresh and new entertainment, to events and crowds of 10 000's across Ontario as we have been for the past 4 successful years. We bring crowds to your event, we entertain the crowds at your event and we keep the crowds at your event. Crowds don't stop to watch bands...but they stop to watch us. We keep the crowds at your event! Don't miss this opportunity to book Maple Sugar Canada 's All Canadian All Girl Professional Dance Company today before it's too late.

Maple Sugar is the All Canadian All Girl Professional Dance Company that provides main stage entertainment. Through passion, dedication and
determination Maple Sugar is a prevelant dance force in the performing arts. Maple Sugar is breaking the mold of dance entertainment.
