MARAZENE - Former BILE Members Talk SkumF***erz, More In New Interview

In a recent interview with Polish Webzine Fabryka (www.fabryka.darknation.pl), Chicago's MARAZENE (which features former members of BILE) shed light on the use of the term "SkumF***erz", a track featured on their debut album MachiNation.

The following is an excerpt from the interview with bassist DieTrich Thrall:

Fabryka: Why do you frequently refer to yourselves as the 'SkumF***erz'?

Marazene: "SkumF***erz" comes from a track on the album. It means several different things depending on the context. In regards to the song it has to do with someone on the verge of giving up hope before they've acheived Self Actualization. If you listen closely you can hear in the intro track, 'Prayer For Tthe Pathetic/The Birth Of Wrath', Psalm 143 from the Bible uttered over this crazy SoundScape. It's strangely appropriate to the track lyrically and I found it delectable that somewhere so long ago someone went through a similar, if different, form of struggle that brought them to where we are in the track 'SkumF***erz'. Thousands of years separate us and still we face the same internal demons. We're not so different after all.

SkumF***erz could be a metaphor for doing the things you need to do even when others around us don't agree with that stand. A tough son of a bitch who isn't afraid to get their hands dirty. The song touchs on indulgence via drugs, promiscuity, pride, and emotional withdrawal as well as more positive aspects such as survival and Self Actualization. It's a crucible on being comfortable with yourself and who you are even when you don't feel like you have every answer. You learn from mistakes. You learn from doing. These things make you stronger and to hell with anyone who says you can't be you."

Marazene are currently gearing up for their headlining performance at Chicagos legendary Metro Cabaret on Saturday, January 21st. The Event doubles as Rebel Radio/Rebel Vision founder Scott Davidson's 8th Annual Birthday Bash and features the return of "The InFamous" (PitBully Records) who will be performing their first show in two years. "Wet Animal"(Escapi Records) featuring founding member of "Trouble", the New Breed of Heavy "NDX", "Smoke" and "SoundMob" are also featured on the bill. The Event is an 18 and up showcase. Tickets are available at the Metro box office or through ticketmaster at a price of 6 dollars in advance or 9 dollars at the door. The show is FREE before 9PM.

In addition to their Direct Support performance for "The GeniTorTurers"/"Beautiful Creatures" on October 20th, Marazene most recently co-headlined "R.O.C.K. Energy Fest" on October 1st and supported "Still Remains" at Pearl Room on September 3rd.

Marazene also World Premiered their video for the song "Execute" (a track most recently featured on the Matrix: Revolutions DVD) at two SRO only viewings in early and mid August at Tre Via in Chicago's Wicker Park/Bucktown neighborhoods.

Marazene Unleash "MachiNation", Explain Writing Approach

After pushing the song "Execute" for the bulk of 2005 Chicago based Marazene have released a demonstration version of "MachiNation" via their official website www.Marazene.com and www.MySpace.com/Marazene. The song was mixed in Decimation Studios by the band.

"We're proud to make this demo version of 'MachiNation' available as the third and final album 'sneak preview'. This is a good taste of the new material we have been working on for the majority of '05 and '06." bassist DieTrich Thrall commented.

The song is the first Marazene material released to the public to feature the writing collaboration of nIKK sKUM (Bile) and DieTrich Thrall (SubSonic). "The material is evolving on a daily basis," DieTrich explained. "It's a bit more experimental. There's the traditional programming with these monster guitar riffs with a focus on arrangement experimentation and this big vocal thing over the top. This is the new. This is the now. And there's no turning back. We're right where we want to be."

'MachiNation' is also the first Marazene material to feature former guitarist now frontman/vocalist nIKK sKUM. "nIKK is well rounded", DieTrich offered. "He's got 'mad' vocal abilities/capabilities and watching him step to the front has just been a dream to watch unfold. He's got different vocal 'personalities' so to speak. So when you combine his approach with some vocal personalities provided by myself and other members you have about 15 ways to approach any given part of any song. It allows us to really come up with something fresh and outside the box."

Marazene debuted "MachiNation" at their recent Direct Support performance with "Five Bolt Main" on February, 19th 2006. "We feel very strongly about this very special track and where it will take us for the remainder of the year," DieTrich commented before the show.

Chicago's MARAZENE (which features former members of BILE) will provide Direct Support for Capital/EMI Recording Artists OTEP on December 9th @ 7th Street in Minneapolis, MN and Megaforce Recording Artist MUSHROOMHEAD at House Of Blues in Chicago, IL on December 13th and at The Machine Shop in Flint, MI on December 15th.

MARAZENE To Perform In SECOND LIFE, Virtual Performance 'First of It's Kind For This Genre'


In a major development, Chicago based Machine / Metalists MARAZENE ( Marazene on My Space
) have announced they will perform in SECOND LIFE, a Matrix-style social interactive virtual world, on Thursday, June 21st. Performance times for the United States are 9PM Central Standard time with a second performance for European audiences on Friday, June 22nd at 6PM CST (12AM London, 1AM Berlin; early Saturday morning)

The 'Virtual Performance' will consist of MARAZENE music performed by Marazene band
members represented by computer animated 'avatars'. The process is similar to video games such as Grand Theft Auto or Resident Evil but one that is entirely unscripted and that will take place within a real-time 'virtual venue' of' 'virtual friends / fans / spectators' from around the real-world. Essentially, real-world participants will log in and move about as their avatar selves and participate in the performance like any other real-world concert.

While other 'virtual bands' have previously performed in Second Life, MARAZENE are the first Nationally touring band from the Metal genre that exists in the real-world to make the jump from reality performance into virtual performance.

"We're proud to be representing the MARAZENE Machine, the Metal Community, and Chicago, in this new avenue of entertainment," multi-instrumentalist DieTrich Thrall commented. "This is the first significant performance of this kind in this medium and the first for the metal genre and it puts us in the position of beating to the punch our peers in the metal community including innovators such as KISS, MARILYN MANSON, IRON MAIDEN, OZZY, ROB ZOMBIE, KORN, NIN, etc. Instead of following someone elses lead, MARAZENE was here first."

"MARAZENE are a testament to all of the bands out there that do everything themselves," Sara Ballenger, producer of the Marazene Second Life performance commented. "They understand what is needed to get their music heard in this new age of music distribution. New options are emerging everyday and SECOND LIFE is one of the most exciting."

For metal enthusiasts the world over unfamiliar with the new form of media DieTrich further described Second Life as "The Matrix meets the Sims meets Warcraft."

The rapidly growing virtual world of SECOND LIFE has over 7.2 million 'virtual residents' from the real-world who log in and journey about making a 'Life Away From Life' home. Residents, who can log in for free and download free software at www.secondlife.com, move about and purchase land with real-world money, build homes that they can have custom interior designed by real-world money, start businesses that sell goods such as cars, clothes, jewelery, makeup, and household goods with real-world money, and even take classes in Second Life that teach everything from basics about Second Life, to learning about different animations. Artists can import real photos or music into Second Life and have a 'virtual gallery' to see, hear, and sell their works. There are even Second Life newspapers dedicated solely to the happenings within Second Life.

Ms. Ballenger, who spotted Marazene on the online social network juggernaut Myspace.com, further elaborated on self managed bands in the industry. "MARAZENEs continued ambitious approach to self promotion rivals that of an independent record label and that's why they were chosen for this. They stand to benefit greatly from this additional outlet for their music."

"It's only a matter of time before you see other National and Independent bands on Second Life and it's only a matter of time until they're able to zap us in there for real," DieTrich speculated. "The possibilities appear to be endlessly exciting. . . just like they are for Marazene."

In a new interview with Clubline Chicago Magazine Magazine, Chicago based Machine/Metalists MARAZENE talk about touring with Megaforce recording artist MUSHROOMHEAD as well as musical influences, their thoughts on their music being considered 'dark', and more. An excerpt with bassist DieTrich Thrall and vocalist Nikk Skum follows:


CCC: You have toured with amazing metal rock bands who are with major labels. Tell us more about these experiences. What have you learned?

DieTrich Thrall: The experience has been incredibly positive and we've come away from it better as individual musicians and better as a band as a whole. For the month of March 2007 we are hitting the entire United States with a National band called Mushroomhead that has been taking the country by storm with one of the most outrageous live shows ever attempted. They're one of the hottest tickets in the National Metal scene and we are flattered and floored that they have turned to us for support on the tour. We did a couple of tour dates with them in December 2006 and they seemed to empathize with the approach we took with the shows. We kept in contact and they believe we're ready for the next big step which is four intensive weeks on the road. It's an unbelievable opportunity and knowing that they thought of us first in regards to this tour after the years we've spent building our band locally and regionally definitely adds to the feeling we're heading in the right direction. That being said we have no plans on slowing down once the tour ends. We are already pursuing other options for April and beyond and we are constantly looking forward to the next big challenge for Marazene.

Nikk Skum: All of the Major label and National/International artists we've done work with have been VERY cool and very supportive of the Marazene machine... We've learned alot from the situations on the road that no one would EVER think of as a possibility... 1st thing being that on the road, ur guys and crew are ur FAMILY... the heart, the brain, the muscle, and the soul... U are reliant on ur partners in order to make the magic happen... the brain would not work without the heart, the heart would not work without the brain... u can adlib with ANY combination of those elements to the same end...
