"Save Banning Ranch, Boost Local Music"

Call Banning Ranch another
battle in the endless war
against reckless
development. The 412-acre
property, filled with
sagebrush, ospreys, willows,
falcons, lizards and owls—
and surrounded by
Huntington Beach, Newport
Beach, Costa Mesa and
Fountain Valley—hasn’t faced
the developer’s shovel since
2001. But now Banning
Ranch owners Aera Energy
(an Exxon-Mobil subsidiary)
and their partners are
threatening to build on it
again. This time, the plan
involves a large mixed-use
plot that could introduce
commercial property, a hotel
and up to 1,300 houses to
the undeveloped wetlands.
Enter the Save Banning
Ranch Benefit, organized by
members of the Banning
Ranch Park and Reserve Task Force—whose aim, according to its website, is to buy
the land outright from Aera and turn it into an enormous natural park. Terry Welsh,
the Task Force’s chairman, believes preserving the land is crucial: “Banning Ranch
is the largest remaining parcel of natural, privately-owned, coastal space in Orange
County,” he says. “Other than this, it’s all spoken for.”

If your goodwill toward Earth won’t drag you out to the benefit, the bill might. The
lineup is almost entirely made up of greater Banning Ranch-area fixtures that span
Orange County’s rock spectrum. Scheduled to appear are Dana Point dark psych/
surf natives the Growlers, 23-year-old blues guitarist Parker Macy and Newport
Beach-based piano prog six-piece Dolphin City (“I just don’t wanna see another big
hotel here,” says singer and guitarist Eric Sullen. “Newport is already too
crowded”). Acoustic guitarist/MC Marc B—the B stands for Beauregard—is also
playing. His history with Banning Ranch is deeply personal: the Sublime-on-Marley
folk song “The River” is based on the fertile wetlands. “That area is a huge part of
my life! We go over there on bikes all the time,” he says. “It’s really sad. Because it
gets you thinking: Maybe the rest of area around the Ranch would look just as good
had we not developed it.”

"Rocking for the Ranch"

COSTA MESA — Marc B took the stage at eVocal Saturday night looking like
one of the young Beach Boys — shaggy blond hair that spilled around a tank
top, blue jeans and flip-flops. Fittingly, he started his set with a song about
the California coast.
It wasn’t a surfing anthem, though. Marc was the first artist on the bill at
eVocal’s benefit show for the Save the Banning Ranch Task Force, and the
song’s chorus had what sounded like an environmental message: “The
California coast/The California coast/To me, it means the most, yeah/But to
you, does it mean the same?”
Marc, one of the independent artists recorded and sold by eVocal, joked
throughout his set that all his songs were “about friendship.” Still, even
though the lyrics may have run the gamut of subject matters, the intent of
the night was clear enough. Patrons paid $7 at the door, and all proceeds
went to the grassroots community group that’s seeking to block
development on the 400-acre property adjacent to Costa Mesa.
“It’s some of the last land we have left, so that’s why we assembled all these
people tonight,” Marc said before launching into his first song.
The bill for Saturday night also included Parker Macy Blues, Dolphin City and
the Growlers. By 9:30 p.m., with Marc and Macy delivering blistering
acoustic sets, dozens of people lined up outside the boutique and art gallery
at 814 W. 19th St. It was impossible to tell how many came for the music or
for the cause, but the members of the Save the Banning Ranch Task Force present said they hoped to win a new convert or two.
“The message we really want to get out there is that what we want to do is
doable,” said Terry Welsh, a volunteer for the task force.
Welsh and other volunteers manned a table behind eVocal with bumper
stickers and wristbands for $2 apiece, as well as a Sparkletts water jug that
doubled as a donation jar. A series of posters propped against the wall
showed a map of Banning Ranch and listed basic facts about the property.
Margaret Royall, who lives in Mesa del Mar, said one of the goals of her
group was to make Costa Mesa residents aware of Banning Ranch, which
resides against the city’s western boundary.
“I don’t know how many people know where Banning Ranch is, but I’m
surprised by the number of people who don’t know,” she said. - The Daily Pilot

"Me and my guitar..."

Magazine: DIG Magazine
Issue: April 2007

Me and my guitar…

Anyone who has had jam sessions with Matt Costa in their living room has to be somewhat decent, right? Well journalism major Marc Beauregard is far beyond that.
He provides mellow, feel-good tunes that any So Cal college student can relate to and appreciate.

This surf stud has been belting out original songs since he was 12 years old.
"Musical instruments were always available at a very young age. Naturally, I picked them up and played them frequently," Beauregard said.

What exactly inspires someone to devote so much effort at such a young age?
"Music was passed to me by my grandfather and father," he said. "It was either live jams that we would create for hours on end, or Neil Young, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Cream, or Tom Petty filling the air. I cannot remember a family get-together without a jam session. There were always guitars and things lying around."

Marc B (a.k.a. Marc Beauregard) is currently lined up with a few fellow musicians to expand on his acoustic-surf jam band.

"Each member represents an intricate facet of the music-making process," he said.
Chris VonWilpert leads on guitar, while Drew Martin rocks the drums. The band adds a little flair with DJ F-Street's turntable skills and these talents mixed with Beauregard's vocals and rhythm guitar will most definitely blow you away.

Although Marc B and his band are tailored toward the Surf audience, his music is inspiring to all types of people. "He provides mellow, feel-good tunes that any So Cal college student can relate to and appreciate,” writes W. Walker in April 2007’s issue of DIG Magazine.
