One of Soultracks top Critics speak...

Michael L. Gibson
Critic, Reviewer and Editor for Soultracks and other media outlets
How do you prepare for a genuine critic?

You can't! Just be honest. Michael is consistently surprising readers with his reviews. Some artists you assume will get a great review from Mr. Gibson and then wham! It comes out and he's got you again. Or there's the one you feel won't get much attention at all and he shines much light on them. It's tough to predict him because he's consistently honest. After reading many of the reviews he presents, you have to say, "Hmm, I agree." He brings integrity to music that is more than needed.

So what do you get when a known candid reviewer, Michael Gibson, interviews the lead singer of M&TT - Marcell Russell, who by the way is known for speaking from the heart?

Well a very short interview, lol. No fluff!

It seems folks all over the world are deciding more and more who they want to hear sing, speak, lecture, lead etc. and soul music is just a small reflection of what's going on. Within Soul Music certain folks are clearly showing themselves to be front runners for the Soul Movement, get familiar and stay familiar with names like Eric Roberson, Donnie, PJ Morton Band, Rahsaan Patterson, Fertile Ground, Conya Doss, Frank McComb, Maya Azucena, Lizz Wright, Raheem DeVuaghn, Anthony David and so so many more that are reviving music.

Yahoo! has created an online radio station for great artists such as these to be heard 24 hrs a day. It's a station called Soul Revival and the people are listening & loving it around the world. It is one of those stations where an emerging artist can be heard by the masses just as easily or as much as current shinning stars.

Of the emerging stars in the soul movement is a band from Charm City Baltimore MD known as Marcell & the Truth. Hearing these guys live is like going to church & the club, the juke-joint & a revival in the same night. Their crowds are consistently diverse. The message behind the music is crossing cultural, racial & political lines.

What can we say about the CD "Hopes Too High"? Well it speaks for itself. It's been on Yahoo! Soul Revival Top Ten charts for over 8 weeks now and still climbing. Currently "Breathe Love" is in the top 4. Folks are buzzing throughout the nation about the CD but it seems Chris Rizik somes it up best in saying, "...There will be many more popular and more critically trumpeted albums in 2007 than Hopes Too High, but it will be tough to find many that are better. This is a nearly timeless disc that would have been as notable in 1977 as it is in 2007."

When Marcell was asked who did he feel the band sounded like his response was, "Hopefully we remind you of a few great soul singers & bands from our rich history. We are not doing anything different other than how we let their influences come out of us. We take a little from so many, we are a product of history".

Family over the last few weeks Marcell & the Truth has been very humbled with quite a few nominations on some great online sites as potential winners of their reviews & people's choice awards for the year - 2007 .

The most prominent of the sites we've been blessed to be featured on is Soultracks.com led by CEO Chris Rizik. This is the #1 Soul music site in America - thousands visit this site on any given day.

Each year they have a people's choice review and we were informed a few days ago that we made the list. Each list/section has 15 artists chosen, from that list they narrow it down to 5 finalists per category. The finalist list has not been announced yet so we don't know if we made that yet. We are just happy to be considered among greats like Howard Hewett, Gordon Chambers, Eric Roberson, Tamia, Deniece Williams, Amel Larrieux just to name a few. If are chosen as a finalist we are going to Detroit and if we win anything, well........

Baltimore is the greatest place. Thank you guys so much for all the support you gave us and continue to give us. We especially would like to thank the "Bassman" & Raquel at 88.9/WEAA in Baltimore for giving us a chance to be heard over the air starting August of last year. Tracy Latrelle gave us our 2nd shot with DC's WHUR/ 96.3 and many others across the country continue to add us in their radio rotations. Either way this goes because of you we already feel like winners. We are working on album 2 right now. We are planning on releasing early spring 2008 or so. We are just getting started family. Enough preaching from me. We love you and again thank so many of you for where we are and where we are headed. "It takes a serious village to raise all us children" Peace-

Marcell of Marcell & the Truth

We are nominated in these 4 categories:

1. Artist of the Year.
2. New Artist of the Year
3. Song of the Year
4. Dou or Group of the year - Soultracks.com

In a time when the music industry has grown too smart for itself, when radio is filled with overproduced, mechanical songs that are more about attitude than music, a casual listener would be led to believe that organic soul music no longer existed. And that's what makes an album like Hopes Too High that much more special. Sounding like they simply grabbed their instruments in a club and started playing, Marcell & the Truth deliver a stunning set of songs here that are equally inspired and inspiring. The group effecively mixes elements of jazz, soul and blues, sounding like the rightful heirs of Frankie Beverly and Maze, but with slightly rougher edges. And while the disc consists mostly of midtempo numbers and relatively simple arrangements, it never sounds repetitive or stale. To the contrary, the simplicity makes it more effective, allowing a bluesy guitar riff or a mournful organ note to alone carry the moment, and bringing even more attention to the fourteen excellent compositions that comprise Hopes Too High. Kudos to producer Teddy Douglas, who makes all the right moves in matching musical moods to lyrical content, from the innocent vocal harmonies of the title cut to the almost eerie tension (reminiscent of the the Dramatics' "In the Rain") underlying the break-up song "Maybe I'm Not the Man" to the joyous build-up throughout the standout track "Time Stops." There will be many more popular and more critically trumpeted albums in 2007 than Hopes Too High, but it will be tough to find many that are better. This is a nearly timeless disc that would have been as notable in 1977 as it is in 2007. But by any measure, it is a keeper -- as are Marcell & the Truth. Very highly recommended.

Bio

This Baltimore native continues to distinguish himself as a writer, producer, singer and performer. Having penned over 700 songs in an eight-year period, being nominated for over 20 independent music awards and winning several of those coveted titles is impressive! Marcell has even shared the cover of a European magazine with Alicia Keys and Snoop Dog. Seeing Marcell as a solo artist can take sometime getting used to after almost a decade with "the Truth" (his former band) but when you hear his music, you realize he hasn't missed a step. He works as if he's just getting started.

Marcell has three previous albums, including two studio albums: Hopes Too High and Symbols. His music has also been the muse for an independent documentary film called You Saved Me. He's often been compared to Luther Vandross, Donny Hathaway and Gerald Lavert, but his own distinct style always shines through.

Marcell has headlined in large arenas and community venues in virtually every major city in America, as well as gracing stages throughout Europe with sold-out performances. Marcell's music has an amazing ability to connect the sacred and secular in ways that just make sense for everyone who listens. Although he is only in his mid 30s his music has audiences often wondering his age, his lyrics are timeless. He's known outside of Baltimore as the "Voice of Baltimore" but in his hometown and throughout he's simply known as "The Voice". As you hear his music it will quickly become clear why Marcell is the Voice!
