Bio

“I wrote this song/so I could tell you/somebody loves you/because you’re special.” This hook, from the single “Baby Girl,” sums up the mission of Marcellus T. (Edwin Marcellus T. Grider), a rap artist/songwriter/producer whose inspirational lyrics aim to instill a sense of self-worth in his listeners. The St. Louis, MO, native began rapping with a church-based hip-hop group and writing songs in 1996 during his sophomore year at Iowa State University. Ever since then, Marcellus T. has shared his unique brand of inspirational hip-hop with thousands throughout the Midwest, East, and South. Audiences in schools, churches, prisons, and even on street corners “in the ‘hood” have heard and embraced his songs of hope.

Whether he is flowing to a mellow track or “getting crunk,” Marcellus T.’s songs share the common theme that all people are important and worthy to be loved and respected. His music also displays his willingness to “go against the grain” by challenging the hedonistic and misogynistic values glorified throughout the entertainment industry. His songs have even addressed issues such as teenage sexuality, domestic violence, and battling breast cancer.

Marcellus T., who is related to “American Idol” Fantasia Barrino and soul music pioneer and legend Booker T. Jones (of Booker T. & the MGs), seems destined to set himself apart as a distinctive voice of hip-hop with his poignant mix of spiritualism and social consciousness. While his lyrics reflect his Christian upbringing and faith, they resonate across religious and cultural barriers and provide a sense of hope and self-affirmation for many who hear his words of inspiration. He established his own record label and production company, Words 2 B Life Records, to promote his music as well as to help other Christian artists reach broader audiences outside of the Christian entertainment arena.

Marcellus T.’s debut album, The Throwback, will be released in late-fall 2006. Several years ago, he produced a single and concept video entitled “Don’t Give It Away” which promoted abstinence before marriage to teenagers and young adults. “Don’t Give It Away” holds the distinction of being featured in Black Entertainment Television’s now-defunct “Teen Summit” program in an episode entitled Sex and Me. The new Throwback album will be preceded by the promotion of the first single, “Baby Girl.” He is currently making concert and radio appearances to promote the upcoming Throwback album.
