"Norwegian CD review"

This review has been translated from Norwegian. Some of the text may be convoluded, however it is a valuable review nonetheless.

MARCHING MIND

These musicians have their own concept that they call the Grog and it is simplified explained a streamlining of grønsjen raw emotion, attitude from the metal and the more subtle and sensitive from the prog! Grog is therefore not a new genre, but be regarded as a concept in which the music in high converse with the listener, and a little pompous terms, a kind of mental hygiene in a musical guise. Marcing Mind comes from Vancover, British Columbia in Canada and had its very beginning in 2005. A starter as related to the great musical and personal chemistry between the singer and brettist Jeremy Tardiff and guitarist Chris Neal. These two "took apart" the jamming strange world, and the way to Grog concept was fairly quick. A concept that provides much joy and comfort to the musicians in the Marching Mind seems they play the music that is optimal for the moment. The music is full of energy but also melodic, tough but sensitive, large-scale but also down to earth! "Marching Mind" clocks in at fifty-two minutes, and is a pretty exciting musical journey that gives us much of what the band said the menu will deliver. There are plenty of contrasts, and the music has many fine moments and the variety is sure is not stupid it. Models for Marching Mind are many and we can name a few, Zamfir, Pearl Jam, Gentle Giant, Primus, Voivod, Genesis, Thelious Monk, JS Bach, King's X, Rush, Nomeansno and Camel. Just as important, the band obviously enjoy the music the starters and obviously lots of playing pleasure. This provides us with good songs and bold atmosphere is very nice debut. A debut where the songs are arranged and accomplished through composed, and where the balance between vocals parties and musical and intense instrumental parts are very good. The mood-related expressions are fairly in line, and there is still something new exciting that pop up even if not all trigger the same amount all the time so there are many things that even the most children returned music lover will enjoy this disc. We think that Marching Mind is at its best when they have their excursions where the progressive stressed in varying degrees, but see, however, that the music concept Grog supplies are both serious, resilient and finurlig that we very much for this work our full support. (Marching Mind) is an absolutely uplifting slice with NOK originality, musicality and substance that we are satisfied.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK
RATING 15 (out of 16)

"Fuse Rush, I Mother Earth and Nirvana in a transporter accident and you'd get something akin to Canada's latest progressive export: Marching Mind. This 10-song debut disc is a great choice for classic rock/prog buffs seeking something new and righteous. The quartet rocks hard, only occasionally going full-on metallic. The solos are economically measured: performances remain in the pocket, servicing the songs well. Vocalist/keyboardist Jeremy Tardif's vocals possess a delightfully "indie" quality, blending surprisingly well with the abiding Rush/Signals-esque vibe.
Compositions are strong, with some truly sophisticated arranging on display in tunes such as "Harbinger" and the radio-ready "Placid Ascension". "Data Complex" features an interesting mix of acoustic guitar, odd time signatures and cyber-lyrics that would make Neil Peart proud. The band really goes for it on "Shattered Helm," a high-octane ripper thick with meter changes.
We'd be remiss not to mention the excellent packaging, featuring a foldout gallery of Jared Tardif's "Tarkus"-like creepy pen and ink illustrations. One of the fresher voices in prog in a while. March over and grab a copy."

Bio

Marching Mind is a completely new musical experience than you’re likely to have heard before. They combine elements from a vast range of influences such as metal, classical, progressive rock and even grunge music…yet seem to avoid sounding derivative of any one genre. In the early days, the band jokingly referred to themselves as “grog” or “grunge-prog” when asked to describe their sound. Somehow this label seemed to stick over the years and became the best way to describe this enigmatic band. Known for their energetic live show and complex yet melodic arrangements, Marching Mind has created a signature sound that is nearly impossible to emulate.

The band’s current lineup came together in Vancouver, BC in 2008 with members hailing from all across Canada. After releasing their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album in 2009 and subsequent 2010 cross-country tour, Marching Mind was signed by Fivebyfive Records and headed back to the studio in fall of 2011 to record their 70 minute follow up album “The Sickness and the Theory”.
