"Marco Marconi Trio / Keep the Way Clear"

JazzIt Review – May/June issue 2010

Keep the Way Clear – Marco Marconi Trio
Marco Marconi (pf); Giulio Angori (db,b); Mauro Giorgeschi (dr)

The timbre of Marco Marconi’s piano playing is sharp and cutting edge, far from the usual soft, opaque sounds of contemporary jazz. On this foundation the pianist takes us inside a repertoire which has its roots deep in classic and modern jazz standards, with reworkings of pieces like Beautiful Love, Time Remembered, Take the “A” Train and ‘Round Midnight. “Keep the Way Clear” is an album rich in musical material with an abundance of original numbers and it is here on the composing front that Marconi shows his own personal style. This is the case with the beautiful ballads Emma and The Day Before, from which emerges a profound melodic and lyrical sensation, and of a latent latin mood in Sally Ann. Just as significant and lively are the interpretations and arrangements of the standards by the trio, for example, the intro to Beautiful Love, which has the idea of an upbeat tango, and the robust, rhythmic setting, almost funky to Take the A Train.

Bio

An inspirational, upcoming talent on the international jazz scene, Italian composer and pianist Marco Marconi played at Umbria Jazz, the Umbria Film Festival, Monterchi Festival, Arezzo Jazz, Festival of Nations and the Valmarecchia Festival in 2011 and in October went to the UK in to play in piano solo at the Lancaster Music Festival (booked through Sonicbids) to great success.

In 2010, Marco was chosen by the prestigious Italian piano makers, Fazioli, to record a jazz CD in piano solo in their incredible concert hall near Venice, and “Mosaico” was launched to great success in January 2011.

Marco spends much of his time writing jazz which he regularly performs in concert. Originally, Marco composed many of his pieces for solo piano but having met fellow Italians, Mauro Giorgeschi and Giulio Angori, the music gradually took on a new form and in 2007 the Marco Marconi Trio evolved.

The Trio had great response from audiences around Italy and launched their first CD, Keep the Way Clear in February 2010, to great acclaim selling copies worldwide, in particular in Japan.

The Trio took part in two international competitions, the Mediterranean Jazz Contest (Elba Island) in July 2009 and the Barga Jazz Contest (Tuscany) in August 2010, both times finishing among the last three finalists.

In its fourth year (2011), the Trio changed formation and the line up now includes the exceptional double bass player Graziano Brufani and the hugely talented and experienced Alberto Argirò on drums.

The Trio performs regularly in festivals, events, private parties and corporate events throughout Italy and their music has also been selected through Sonicbids for radio airplay on Jazz City (Radio NEO), Indie Jazz Cafe Podcast, KMHD Jazz Radio Portland, Que 98.2 FM Smooth Jazz, indie104 & Jazz.com (Radio ARA Luxembourg).
