Bio

Marc Thomas, 23, hails from the San Francisco Bay Area. Born and raised in the historic East Bay, Thomas was exposed at an early age to the music of iconic East Bay artists like Tower of Power and Sly & the Family Stone, groups he now counts as some of his greatest influences. Raised on a steady diet of old-school funk, rock, and soul that included artists like the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Billy Preston, and Chicago, Thomas combines a soulful throwback sensibility with modern pop overtones. Thomas, who got his start in theater, began playing guitar at the age of eleven and subsequently taught himself to play piano (including keyboards and clavinet).

But Thomas’ trajectory has not always been strictly musical. In 2002, Thomas was accepted to University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 2006 with degrees in Film and Political Science. As a student at Berkeley, Thomas focused his artistic energies on film theory and filmmaking, writing and shooting short films in the United States, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic. In 2007, he went on to earn a Masters degree from
Stanford University in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. Over the course of his academic career, Thomas has also completed fellowships at Harvard University’s Ukrainian Research Institute and in Columbia University’s department of Slavic Languages. He is fluent in French and Russian and has spent extensive time living, working, and studying in Russia, Ukraine, and France, where much of his mother’s side of the family still lives.

It was as an undergraduate at Berkeley that Thomas decided to seriously pursue a career in music and began to write and perform his original material. While there, he met physicist and fellow guitarist, Jesse Engel, with whom he recorded an acoustic EP in 2005 under the guidance of avant-garde jazz composer and former bassist of the 60s psychedelic band, Moby Grape, Gordon Stevens. In early 2006, Thomas’ demo tape landed in the hands of multi-talented veteran producer and guitarist, Chris Camozzi, who immediately signed Thomas to his production company, Mozaic Music, with a view to taking the young artist’s career to the next level. Since then, the two have worked together as a creative team, and, under Camozzi’s guidance, Thomas had been able to expand his musical vision, develop as an artist, and carve out his unique sound. In 2006, Thomas recorded a series of demos with Camozzi at the Plant Studios in California, and the two have since assembled a body of work that consists both of Thomas’ original compositions and songs that the two have co-written.

As he continues to write new material, Thomas has built a steadily growing following on MySpace and has gained over 70,000 fans since he launched his site in early 2007. Marc Thomas went live on iTunes in August 2007, and his digital music sales have increased two-fold every month since then. In February of 2008, Thomas received nationally syndicated radio airplay on the Kidd Kraddick Morning show in a segment called “Music That Makes You Cooler.” Exposure on the show, which is based in Dallas, Texas and carried on nearly 100 affiliates across the country, has generated unprecedented traffic to Thomas’ MySpace page and has contributed to a major surge in his iTunes sales.

Most recently, Thomas and his band were invited to play at The Knitting Factory in Hollywood, CA for an Atlantic Records showcase.

Though music remains his chief focus, Thomas would eventually like to return to the stage as an actor and also pursue a career in filmmaking.
