Freedom Jazz Movement was formed by Artist percussionist/composer Marcus L. Miller in 1997. Miller assembled a core group of Los Angeles based musicians and added to the music poet Jennifer Bowens and dancer/choreographer Tamica Washington-Miller.
The group exists to bring together the artistic mediums of music, spoken word, and dance in an effort to produce a rounded artistic statement which arouses the senses, stimulates the mind, and moves the soul...a pleasing art aestesthic.
The music is composed by Marcus L. Miller and embodies many themes of the African Diaspora. In Miller's music, one hears the Blues, Jazz, Reggae, Sambas, Bossa Novas, Gospel, and African Traditional rhythms. The poetry tells the story and the dance brings it to life!
The group has performed throughout Southern California at various venues and festival events; most notably supporting Chris Botti in 2007. FJM also provides the musical backdrop for some of the dance score for the Lula Washington Dance Theatre. This combination of modern dance and jazz has performed throughout the US since 2006.
