Maree Sheehan helped pave the way for women in the New Zealand music industry in the 1990s by breaking the singer-songwriter mould and bringing homegrown dance-pop to the foreground. Now after a decade-long hiatus, she is poised to step back into the spotlight with a stunning new 10-track album.

The Christchurch born, artist was eight when she took up piano; by 14 she’d written her very first song.

“Mum and her sisters had a trio and they used to play little gigs. So there was lots of singing in my childhood. You know, the classic guitar-party scenario. I was brought up with all those old sing-a-long songs.”
 

The new album, Chasing The Light composed and produced my Maree Sheehan was recently released in February 2013, immediately going top 20 on the Itunes store and a week later debuting at Number 9 on the New Zealand music Charts. This album showcases Sheehan’s rich and smooth vocals and the depth of her songwriting experience. What's more, it's bound by neither rules nor genre. Instead Sheehan walks her own path with timeless and classic heartfelt piano-driven ballads, such as In The Light and How Do I Say Goodbye. She seamlessly weaves these songs of loss and love with upbeat feel-good summer tunes, like Rock With Me and the reggae-infused Do I Wish.

“It’s not about the business, it’s about the music,” Sheehan says of her return. "It's the music that dictates to me.

“I’m writing and I’m playing again – and I’m really enjoying it! I’m not doing this because I want to be famous. I just believe I’ve got some great songs, and I want them to be heard.”

Chasing The Light is an honest album that takes you on a heartbreaking, yet joyous journey - delivered by one of the true stalwarts of New Zealand music.

By the early 1990s it was clear Sheehan had something special to offer and with the backing of a major label, she released a string of singles – among them the Top 20 hits Make You My Own,

Wasting no time, Sheehan signed an album deal with an Australian label and based herself across the Tasman to record her full-length debut, 1996’s Drawn in Deep.

Sheehan’s unique style, which blended dance-pop with traditional Maori instrumentation and hip-hop and R ‘n’ B, broke new musical ground.

“New Zealand was so used to having ‘the girl with the guitar’ but you didn’t see women out there on the stage shaking their booties to dance music. At the time, that was different,” says Sheehan.

But success didn’t come without its struggles.

“Radio didn’t really want anything to do with New Zealand music unless you were one of the Finn brothers or Dave Dobbyn. And certainly not Maori music - it was even harder if you were a woman.”

 Against the odds, Sheehan remained an integral part of a pioneering group of female singer-songwriters throughout the 1990s, which included Emma Paki, Teremoana Rapley and Moana Maniapoto. Sheehan did her degree, majoring in Music and English and wrote songs for television and film such as ‘Once Were Warriors’ and ‘Broken English’ and for other artists. 

Now after years toiling away behind the scenes, the accomplished singer-songwriter and producer is taking her chance shine once again.
