Bio
What happens when punk rock kids get business degrees, get married and work in a bank? They have to grow up. That is the story of Luke Bergen and Paul Hodgert of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada's Marginal. Both prolific performers and writers, both now facing adulthood head on.
Marginal play expansive indie-pop/indie-rock. They take pieces of such bands as the National, the Kinks, Page France, Guided By Voices and the Buzzcocks and rebuild them in their own image. Both Hodgert and Bergen bring their unique voices to singing/songwriting. Whether they are performing as a duo or with a full band, there is a weight to their performance that is beyond their years.
As the former drummer for the Winnipeg Junk-pop band Boats (Kill Rock Stars), Bergen has toured North America several times supporting the records Cannonballs Cannonballs and A Fairway Full of Miners. Hodgert has spent the past eight years working as a producer and recording engineer out of his studio, Urban/Rural Recording. He has also been active in the Winnipeg music scene, releasing seven records, since 1998.
Bergen and Hodgert are currently working on Marginal’s debut album, “Once More Unto the Breach, Dear Friends, Once More,” due for a fall 2013 release. The album is being produced by Hodgert and will be released on their own Urban/Rural Records.
