MARIA ANTONAKOS
Maria Antonakos is a classically trained singer who is known for her expressive crystal clear voice and innovative and dramatic performances of original music in five languages.
Maria sings a fusion of pop, world and opera that has been called “atmospheric, mystical, mysterious, prescient - all that and more”. She has an ethereal voice with an evocative, soulful clarity that is powerful and distinctive. Her audiences are transported by the beauty of her voice and the uplifting, personal and intimate atmosphere her performances evoke.
Her second CD, Mystras – Siren Songs of the Mediterranean, was released by Marquis/EMI Music Canada. It features lyrical sometimes haunting music in English, Greek, Italian and Spanish.
She tours with at 3-piece band. Performances have included appearances for the Greek, Spanish, Turkish and Israeli Embassies in Ottawa, a performance for the November issue launch of Ottawa Life’s Women we admire (where Maria was featured on the cover), shows with Lakeshore Arts Etobicoke, Carleton Place Arts Council, a Breast Cancer Gala that raised over $100,000 and a debut performance at the acclaimed Toronto nightclub Hugh’s Room.
Recent radio appearances include features and interviews on CBC Radio One - Hear and Now with Avril Benoit, Fresh Air, Big City Small World and Metro Morning.
Omni TV has produced profiles of her performances and Armitage Productions, Montreal featured Maria and her music on their documentary series, Women in Music, which aired internationally.
She has filmed a music video of her single, the Stars of Sparta for Bravo!
Maria’s debut CD of original works entitled, four corners no walls, was released on Marquis Records/EMI Music Canada.The CD is influenced by ancient texts and includes epic sound-scapes overlaid with soaring melodies. It also features a duet with Canadian tenor John McDermott. Four corners no walls, received positive critical response from the media and the recording industry. Three songs from this album posted to MP3.com were No. 1. A music video for the song Passengers was No 1. on BRAVO TV.
In addition to her original music, Maria she has performed with Symphony Nova Scotia, the Edmonton Symphony, the Huronia Symphony, Timmins Symphony Orchestra, Hart House Orchestra, the Boris Brott Musci Festival and the Three Small Concerts series of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
Her performances in opera have included leading roles in La Serva Padrona and the Old Maid and the Thief as well as opera in concert productions of the works of Mozart, Puccini, Handel, and Wagner.
She has appeared on Canada AM, City TV and Breakfast Television and in the independently released feature film, Nasty Burgers and her voice can be heard in jingles for American Express and international cosmetic companies.
Maria has an Honours Music B.A. in vocal performance for University of Toronto. Post-graduate activities include studies at New York University, The Juilliard School, The Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria and The Gubbio Music Festival, Gubbio, Italy as well as masterclasses in Zurich and Salzburg.
