With a decade of success behind them, Mariachi Mujer 2000 has continued to amaze audiences throughout the world. Their most recent accomplishment was their participation at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. They represented the United States along side the Olympians, performing for an audience of approximately 100,000 spectators. Mariachi Mujer 2000 was one of the five bands in the world to be chosen to participate and represent their country in the spectacular opening ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics. In 2007, they had the pleasure of performing for president Barack Obama during his run for office. The fundraiser event was held at Ms. Oprah Winfrey's Estate in Santa Barbara, California where they performed amongst other artists and entertained some of the greatest actors known today. In 2004, Mariachi Mujer 2000 achieved yet another professional accomplishment by performing in Guadalajara, Mexico at the prestigous "Teatro Degollado" where they received a full house standing ovation and a personal congratulations from the legendary Maestro Ruben Fuentes, phenomenal arranger and owner of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan.
From it's inception, the goal of Mariachi Mujer 2000 has been to demonstrate that women can compose, arrange and perform some of the most challenging pieces in mariachi music. Mariachi Mujer 2000 has kept the tradition of mariachi music alive and is proud to say that the group continues to be lead and directed by women. Marisa Orduno is the groups founder and director. With great leadership, love and a passion for music she has taken the group through a musical journey of admirable successes, gaining the group international fame and recognition. Laura Sobrino, musical director for Mariachi Mujer 2000, continues to be recognized as one of the female pioneers in the history of mariachi and has been a collaborating force behind the success of Mariachi Mujer 2000.
Mariachi Mujer 2000 is comprised of hand selected women musicians from all over the nation. Each of these musicians are highly skilled vocalists and instrumentalists whos versatility is extraordinary. Not only are the women in this group talented; they are also educated. Many hold bachelor's degrees and various credentials in education. Mariachi Mujer 2000 is a strong believer in education; especially music education. The group continues to teach at workshops, festivals, elementary schools, and universities throughout the country. They want to continue to set the example as role-models for the younger generation of today in order to keep this music alive and flourishing.
Mariachi Mujer 2000 is proud to say they have shared the stage with some of the most influential artists in the world; Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan to Los Camperos De Nati Cano, Mariachi Sol de Mexico, Pepe Aguilar, Pedro Fernandez, Pablo Montero, Trio Los Panchos and (Godmother) Aida Cuevas just to name a few. Mariachi Mujer 2000 continued to break barriers by adding mariachi music to genres one wouldn't imagine. In 2006, they performed with rap star Lil Rob for two Power House Jam shows that included some of the best artists in Rap and R&B today. In 2001, they were part of the grand finale at the 8th Annual Latin Jazz Festival; closing the show with the Tito Puente Latin Jazz Golden All Star band conducted by Eddie Palmieri. Mariachi Mujer 2000 continues to collaborate and create music with popular artists that is universal and appreciated by many.
Coverage of Mariachi Mujer 2000's musical career has been featured in newspapers, magazines, and books such as, Mariachi Music in America (2006) by Daniel Sheehy and Mariachi (2009) by Patricia Greathouse. Mariachi Mujer 2000 has also been referenced in the media, on the internet, in documentary soundtracks, and has been included in a Network series for the Smithsonian Institute of Art.
