"Maria Miller - Second Hand Charm"

Maria has gone out on her own after stints with bands like Crannog and Keeba and has released her first solo CD.

The well-traveled Elgin-based singer-songwriter, who supported The Proclaimers on their recent Scottish tour, has played her songs in America’s musical hotbeds of Memphis, Nashville and New Orleans, and is rapidly gaining international recognition.

If she continues to write and perform songs like the four tracks on Second Hand Charm she deserves all the recognition in the world.

‘I Don’t Want Tomorrow To Be Monday’ closes the album and it’s the track that stayed in my mind the longest. It features a great sing-a-long chorus that’s catchier than chicken pox and will have universal appeal because we all hate Mondays – who sang that again?

It’s a terrific song that anyone who despises the daily grind will identify with – “Head down keep out of trouble/Boss calls to burst my bubble…. Well it’s just two days ‘till I’m liberated/I hate it here I get frustrated.”

‘The Fool’ is a nice upbeat country barrelhouse number and I defy anyone’s feet not to tap or head not to bob at the “It’s all you need” refrain, while ‘Rain’ is a beautiful song – and very appropriate if you live in Elgin – and highlights Maria’s amazing voice.

‘Always’ is a little bit haunting, a little bit Twin Peaks, with Maria’s shivering vocals adding atmosphere to this well crafted song.

She has the voice, she has the songs and, with ‘I Don’t Want Tomorrow To Be Monday’, Maria could have a big hit on her hands.

"Maria Miller - Second Hand Charm"

Even with just an acoustic guitar Maria is a force of nature. She has a crisp and clear voice that can change in style from Enya to Kate Bush.

‘Rain’ opens the four track CD. The song begins acoustically then splashes into a lush blend of piano and violins.

Maria has supported The Proclaimers and played Celtic Connections and T in The Park. She’s well known in the live acoustic scene but, if Maria is branching out into a new poppier market, she’s managed to retain the depth of her acoustic work.

‘The Fool’ is a rollicking tune with honky tonk piano and a neat line in self-deprecation. Lyrics include: “I’m just a creep, I’m dull when I’m deep and I rain on the sunshine I bring you.”

Always is an instantly forgettable ballad but Maria makes amends with ‘I Don’t Want Tomorrow To Be Monday’, which could be a Beautiful South song.

It seems Maria is turning into quite the musical chameleon.

Bio

From the North of Scotland, Maria has managed to cultivate her own infectious brand of lyrical acoustic pop. Equally at home as a solo artist or with a band, Maria is an exceptional performer, combining an intense honesty with broad commercial appeal. A vastly experienced artist, Maria has taken her music across the UK to Ireland, France & the U.S.A.

In 2003 Maria played Celtic Connections, at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, and toured London’s acoustic venues, including The Kashmir Klub and The Halfmoon. This was followed by an appearance on the PRS/Songlink stage at the Go North music conference. Maria also supported The Proclaimers on their Scottish tour, appeared at the Stockton International Festival and played The Rainbow Room and The Acoustic Playhouse in Los Angeles.

Maria started 2004 with a return to Celtic Connections and then travelled to the U.S.A. to play acoustic venues in Memphis & Nashville. This was followed by shows in London and performances at Borders’ stores to promote her new CD, ‘Second Hand Charm’.

Maria’s song, ‘Mischief’, has been included on a BBC TV soundtrack and won an award in the UNISONG international songwriting contest.

In 2005 Maria appeared at Music Works, in Glasgow, and Manchester’s In The City Convention.

During the summer of 2006 Maria recorded her album, ‘Just a little….’, at the CeolNua studios in Ireland.
