Maria Ventura

BandPopSinger/Songwriter

Singer-songwriter, acoustic indie pop, folk and ballads with an emphasis on what it's like being a teenage girl in a family in a suburban community in America right now.

Biography

I'm a 15 year old girl who's life is good but crazy with quite a bit of performing (since I was 9, writing songs since I was 11) and lots of friends (many of them musicians who are more than twice my age) and I try to balance these things with having too many honors classes in a Catholic high school in a run down old mill city in New England.

Lyrics

Just Keep Dreaming

Written By: Maria & Steve Ventura

The whole world's gone shopping
I'm home alone
TV's just stupid
I can't find the phone

So I, I'll just keep dreaming away
So I, I'll just keep dreaming all day

Like a cloud, I don't have a plan
Like a stone, I just know where I am

So I, I'll just keep dreaming away
So I, I'll just keep dreaming all day

The book I was reading
Was left in the rain
My laptop is frozen
I can't play any games
My mother is working
My friends never call
It's 90 degrees out
No ride to the mall

I watch my reflection in my windowpane
That's not me crying
It's starting to rain
It's starting to rain

So I, I'll just keep dreaming away
So I, I'll just keep dreaming all day

Mooncheese

Written By: Maria & Steve Ventura

I’ve been thinking maybe cheese isn’t really
What the moon is made of
And I’ve been thinking maybe songs on the radio
Exaggerate some things about love

Everybody’s heart is bleeding, broken
Hot as fire, cold as ice
It’s either pumping out poison or souring
Straight out of hell into paradise

I’ve been paying close attention
To people walking hand in hand
That’s something that I can understand

I saw a man in a movie walk a thousand miles
Across the frozen tundra
To find a woman that he knew he couldn’t have
And so, of course, his heart was torn asunder

Everyday another top 40 song
Kills another boy or girl off with a rhyme
It’s never just “good-bye, it’s okay”
It’s always got to be the end of time

I’ve been paying close attention
To people walking hand in hand
That’s something that I can understand

Do people really think I’m such a fool
To believe such passions rule the world while I’m in school
And when I get home all the grownups
Just pretend to be tired and bored?

I don’t think so…

I hope some day the souring passion grabs me
And lifts my heart to touch the stars
But right now I’ve got some homework to do
And I’m hungry for a slice of mooncheese…

I’ve been paying close attention
To people walking hand in hand
That’s something that I can understand

Moonlight

Written By: Maria Ventura

Take me to the land where everything's made of stone
So hard to break

Because I dont really want to walk this path alone
I’ve made so many mistakes

Moonlight, carry me through this cold night
Cuz I dont really feel right
on my own

Don’t leave me stranded on this island alone
Now that everybody knows

I have finnaly decided that I cant
Go back home

Moonlight, carry me through this cold night
Cuz I dont really feel right
on my own

Moonlight, carry me through this cold night
Cuz I dont really feel right
on my own

Discography

I finished recording my first real album in a real (all analog) recording studio and it has now been mastered at a studio in NYC and is off to be duplicated! Many of my favorite local musicians play on it -- from The Duke Roillard Band, The Eyesores, Gloria Deluxe, Fern Knight and many others -- and it has string arrangements, horn sections -- I'm very excited! There is one traditional song on it and the rest are originals. For a few even newer songs, check out: http://www.myspace.com/mariaventuramusic

Set List

I usually play sets between 30 and 50 minutes long and about two-thirds to four-fifths of the material is original. The covers I do might be by Bob Dylan or Bright Eyes or Warren Zevon on Lou Reed or Etta James or The Holy Modal Rounders or Coldplay or Matty Charles or Bonnie Raitt or many others -- I like lots of different kinds of music.
