Maria Willson - Camden Barfly

A nationwide tour as support to UK pop outfit Busted is pretty good as the first thing you do once you are signed. That’s exactly what young Hastings lass Maria Willson did moments after she inked a deal with UK label Telstar.
Tonight’s gig is somewhat different and the 21 year-old found herself face to face with a Camden crowd at Camden Town’s very own Barfly. Maria Willson has a four-piece band and a good old rock 'n’ roll band at that. Keys (organ), bass, gtr & drums with the steamy chanteuse at the mic. Already with one top thirty UK hit under her belt and another single released this week Maria Willson is seen as a pop artist with a ‘bit of an edge’. Tonight’s show, a mere half an hour as support to Silversun saw the band tweak the level and wire up the pedals in a dynamic & power packed set.

Willson has a strong, dynamic but still young voice but still manages to sit nicely on top of her powerful band of ardent rockers. With tracks that cross pop with punk and ballad with rock there does seem to be a future here. Although a strange and demanding place to play for the young singer the small but packed venue had no adverse effect on Maria. In fact she rose to the occasion, proving her worth both as a singer and as a visual delight. Imagine somewhere between Britney, Christina and Anna Kornikova. Now that’s no insult, all very attractive young women. But on top of that Maria proves that she has the voice to match. As for the songs? The two strongest have to be the singles ‘Chooza Looza’ and the latest release ‘ Mr. alibi’ the latter performed as a perfect acoustic track.

If through the live scene, gigging up and down the country is the way to the nations hearts then she is fully prepared and capable. - London scene

Bio

I was signed to Telstar records in 2003 and released two top 40 records in the UK. Unfortunately Telstar hit financial difficulties and I was left without representation. Although It's been almost impossible to get back on the ladder with little help, we haven't given up and now I have an album and single ready to go. Some of my original band members went on to pursue other projects but I do have a full band in the UK, I tend to do meetings on my own or with my guitarist/co writer. Our sound is very unique, the recordings from home sound good so I can only imagine how epic it could sound with a great producer behind it. Over the years I have worked so hard on my project and I truly believe our music is hot and very commercial. I'm very excited about it.
