A mosaic is a picture of decorative design made by setting small colored pieces of stone or tile into a surface.
This definition is an accurate portrayal of the newly formed band Maria Y El Sol playing tonight at the Jubilee.
Led by singer songwriter and saxophone player Christophe Ambrosino, Maria Y El Sol is an eight piece band featuring an assorted style of music from around the world.
Maria Y El Sol takes musical styles from other cultures and pieces them together to form an unified sound.
"I think Maria Y El Sol is a musical journey", says Ambrosino, a native of Brodeaux France.
He says his songs are all worldly, ranging from New Orleans to salsa, rumba, ska...
He said he is from France and American music is a worldly music to him, and therefore has an unique spin.
"Maria Y El Sol" is made up of eight of the most talented musicians in Oxford" says Lucas Leigh.
The band also includes Tom Queyja, on electric and nylon strings guitar, Jeff Henson on congas accordion and flute, Bill Perry on keyboards, Santiago Roberts on bass and trombone, Kevin Wilson on trombone and trumpet, Jesse Martin on saxes and timbales, Ashley Adams on drums and percussion.
"The musicians know how to get into the music and move around," Leigh says. He describes the band's sound as an eclectic mix of cultures", almost like afro Cuban jazz".
Members of the band come from various places such as France, Spain, Puerto Rico and most of them speak several languages.
"I thought the band was unique and neat to listen to", said Maria Echiburu a junior from Morton, who saw Maria Y El Sol two weeks ago.
"Their style is completely different, but it is fun and easy to enjoy".
Echiburu said she recommends the band to anyone who likes to feel inspired and enjoys live music.
The band hits the stage at 10 pm.

Maria Y El Sol breaks away from every normality and
genre of the area blending world beats and multi
lingual song writing. A multi talented group of
musicians, a band of gypsies if you will, that loves
to play music of the heart and mind. Maria Y El Sol is
a touring act with credibility and charm.
The sound is an unique melting pot, somewhat like
Jerry Lee Lewis on Spanish fly. Flamboyant Latin
guitars and percussion . Bright saxophones and
accordions complete the musical journey.
"We are a bunch of guys (and girls) who love music,
who love to travel, who love the world as a whole, who
love every type of music, who love different cultures,
who love to make people dance, who love the sun and
the beach, who got together to play some music," says
band founder Ambrosino.
For the past two years the band has been touring the
MS, AL, and FL gulf coast, playing over 300 gigs
delivering their upbeat and happy spirit every week.
