Singer-songwriter Maricelle will be releasing her first EP – Pursuit – on 7th January 2017. As a teaser, the lead single “Lovedrunk” has dropped today (4th November) to coincide with the launch of the EP pre-order at iTunes. A music video will follow on 11th November.

We caught up with Maricelle via email to get the quick lowdown on “Lovedrunk”.


What is “Lovedrunk” about?

“Lovedrunk” is my honest and raw expose on love. Being “Lovedrunk” to me, means being so passionate and devoted to something or someone, that you experience it intensely in it’s purest form. Being in love and being heart broken are both parts of being in love. The ecstatic highs of the first half of the song polarises the depression of the negative outcomes of that relationship.

What was its inspiration?

These interactions are similar to personal experiences that I’ve had, and I just wanted to share about something I feel strongly about. The song started out as my experience giving up everything to pursue music full-time, dropping a job I liked a lot, leaving people too. I knew it wouldn’t be an easy path ahead, but struggling for it has been so worth it.

How would you describe your music and who are your influences?

Pop, contemporary R&B and UK Pop-Rock Electronica, influenced by Ellie Goulding, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Halsey, Tove Lo and Coldplay.

Why should anyone listen to or buy your music?

I think overall, I’d like to emphasise how the songs I write are representative, I feel, of my generation of the millennials. So I hope that when they hear “Lovedrunk”, maybe someone might’ve had a similar experience, or is experiencing it right now, and shares the same sentiments. To share my thoughts over the airwaves and let a stranger hear an idea out of my head, sung with my own voice (literally) I hope that creates a connection to that person over the airwaves, and connects us. - power of pop

Last week, Singaporean independent artist Maricelle debuted her very first single 'Lovedrunk' to much buzz online. Taken off her forthcoming freshman EP entitled Pursuit, the intimate and delicate track presented us with our very first glimpse of the singer-songwriter's potential, and we have to say that we're pretty impressed!

Of course, she's also previously made a name for herself as a graduate of the National Arts Council NOISE mentorship programme, and as a finalist in the NEA ECO songwriting competition, alongside her work with The Final One runner-up Shaun Jansen. But 'Lovedrunk' was certainly her best and most notable effort to date.

Produced and mixed by James Lye and mastered in Sweden by Björn Engelmann (Tove Lo, Alesso, Zara Larsson), this sterling track features a deft blend of contemporary R&B and electronic pop.

The album itself will be launched on 7th January 2017, with a live performance at the Singjazz Club in Sultan Hotel, supported by the good folks at National Arts Council. Tickets for the show are already available here.

Happiness, Maricelle, indie Pop Rnb singer-songwriter with experimental electronic elements and light vocals, has been pursuing it.

That’s the main theme of her debut EP, ‘Pursuit’, coming up January 7th 2017.

Her music is composed with questions such as the meaning of life and how to be happy on your own.

Maricelle focuses on specific themes in her EP: the perspective, the awakening, the ambition and the passion.

Lately, she’s been writing about how the passion (for something or someone, love or friendship) can get you through ups and downs, leading you back and forth, leaving crazy and dizzy, even feeling kind of drunk.

That’s how her debut single LoveDrunk was born, an ethereal and dreamy track, with mesmerizing vocals, supported by a cool and slow tempo, suggesting a moment of daydreaming, followed by a moment of disillusion, along the keyboard playing.

he light electronic elements really bring a chill atmosphere, mixing good vibes with sad mood.

In her Pursuit of happiness, LoveDrunk, standing for her red Passion, follows the chronology of her life walk-through.

As she explains:

“I meant for the parts to be a chronology of movements towards my pursuit of happiness,

As a personal experience of the current journey I am making pursuing music full-time.

The perspective is about understanding ourselves and our situations better to be grateful,

The awakening is about realizations and epiphanies that allow our minds to grow.

The ambition is about being ambitious and going for what you want or believe in, standing for something.

The toxicity is understanding what is bad in your life and eradicating it.

Lastly, the passion is ‘Lovedrunk’, about finding love in something or someone, in people, friends, a hobby, or even loving yourself.

“It takes over, and I’m losing control”, here, “Lovedrunk” explores the feeling of being drunk with love and feeling fully that emotion. All relationships have ups and downs, be it romantic love, platonic love between two friends, or even your relationship with a passion or a hobby.

Finding something worth suffering for was important to me, because everything has ups and downs, so why not find something/someone worth loving?

It’s also about going all out and not being afraid to try at something you really want to.”

Lucky Ones is the second single of Maricelle’s highly anticipated Pursuit EP. As the most anthemic track on the album, it boasts a carefully designed sonic experience of uplifting ecstasy. Lucky Ones opens this audio journey with a monumental anthem of positive disposition and euphoria. Set in the example of a romance struggling amongst the haste of a busy modern city life, it celebrates pausing to breathe in the beautiful moments and being grateful for one’s circumstance, and finding the good parts in the bleakness.
