"Penguin Eggs - Barry Hammond"

The Marigolds

Independent

Gwen Swick, Caitlin Hanford, and Suzie Vinnick have pooled their considerable individual talents to form a group that is pretty well impossible not to love. Three terrific voices singing individually and in harmony on great songs written by themselves and others? What’s not to like? Swick and Hanford are already in the female vocal group, Quartette, but luckily that hasn’t stopped them from forming another partnership with Vinnick, who also has ongoing projects with Betty & The Bobs and the pop trio Vinnick Sheppard Harte. Sensitively backed by the tasteful percussion of Randall
Coryell and with a little help from Chris Whiteley on various instruments, the three women really come into their own both as guitarists and vocalists on this disc. Picking a single favourite just isn’t possible. Lovely, lovely sounds!

"Toronto Star - Greg Quill"

No doubt in some part moved by the popularity and abundance of female harmony groups in the global roots music arena, three fine songwriters, singers and grand dames of Canadian acoustic/folk circuit — Gwen Swick, Caitlin Hanford and Suzie Vinnick — have teamed up as the Marigolds in the hope of proving that sometimes a trio can be greater than the sum of its parts. Their debut, which will be previewed live Wednesday night at Hugh's Room, is a provocative blend of pure kitsch ("Till the End of the World," "My Darlin' Cory is Gone," "Inchworm") and country-folk originals and new covers that move from the achingly sentimental ("The Hands That Rock Your Cradle," "Train of Tears") to the disquietingly sinister ("Father Adieu"). What their full three-part harmonies lack in terms of a distinctive blend — in a couple of instances, the singers risk more than they ought to — is more than compensated for in the individual vocal parts, remarkable for their originality and conviction. And the uncluttered acoustic guitar accompaniment — filled out with contributions on drums from Randall Coryell and on harmonica, trumpet and pedal steel from Chris Whiteley — is an absolutely delightful distillation of pure, rich tones and restrained strumming and picking. One of the more pleasant surprises is Vinnick's excellent lead guitar work. Greg Quill - Toronto Star

"Chronicle Herald - Stephen Pedersen"

The enchanting Marigolds...their mastery of expressive nuance, emotional implications which, despite their subtlety they project to the back of a crowded tent, is allied to three of the sweetest voices and a collective musical intelligence beyond compare. - Chronicle Herald, Halifax, NS CANADA

"Kitchener Waterloo Record - Robert Reid"

"A sweet-voiced cross between the Andrews Sisters and the Wailin' Jennys... The trio is too fresh to be retro, even though they evoke vintage sounds of an earlier era. Similarly, they can't be confined to a single musical camp, even though they brush low-fi country. They are what they are--The Marigolds. And that's more than enough."

Bio

Charismatic! The Marigolds are a roots music ensemble of the award-winning singer/songwriters Suzie Vinnick, Gwen Swick and Caitlin Hanford. Their original tunes reveal a genuine affection for the timeless and classic genres of traditional country, bluegrass, folk and blues. The Marigolds provide their own groovy instrumental backup, featuring Suzie on lead guitar, Caitlin on rhythm guitar and Gwen on electric bass. Beautiful lead vocals and soulful harmonies are the icing on the cake.

The Marigolds have been nominated for Canadian Juno Awards and Canadian Folk Music Awards.

The Marigolds have performed at concerts and festivals across Canada, including Mariposa, Home County, Blue Skies, Folk Harbour in Lunenburg NS, Northern Lights, Folk on the Rocks in Yellowknife, and the Vancouver Island Music Festival.

In music festival settings, Caitlin, Suzie and Gwen all enjoy workshops, both as individuals and as The Marigolds. Favourite topics include songwriting (all), blues guitar (Suzie), bluegrass (Caitlin), and harmony singing workshops. Also popular with festival audiences are their interactive harmony workshops—teaching accessible songs with harmony parts to an audience.

"Each one of these women has loads of charisma, talent, versatility...a very powerful performance, indeed. They are simply a joy to work with, and to have at your festival."
