"Folkwoods Festival"

Marike is a new talent on the Dutch stages. I saw her this last summer on the folkwoods festival and enjoyed her concert a lot. A mixture of jazz, blues and pop with nice vocals and brought very pure. She won the big price of the Netherlands, which is a very prestigious music-price in Holland. She recorded a limited five song numbered EP with own work. Five fine songs with as highlight Hide & seek. On this cd she plays it as a duet between piano and vocals, live she did this in duet with a fender rhodes what had a fantastic impact. Get yourself this nice first EP by this new talent. It will be worth hundreds of Euro when she is big and famous all around the world within a few years and it contains good music as well. (Eelco Schilder, folkworld.de) - Folkworld.de

"More than a feeling"

Every year the Route Festival, held in the Belgian city of Gent and Netherlands' Tilburg, which is dedicated to European and North American roots music, is good for a couple of pleasant surprises. According to the music media, the Route 05 program included several noteworthy female singer-songwriters, but none failed to draw me in. However, one who immediately seduced me was the lesser-known singer Marike Jager. Her songs are often reminiscent of the Beatles but if you listen, you'll hear snippets of Supertramp an even styles dating back to well before World Warr II. What separates her from most others of the singer-songwriter genre are her refined arrangements and the stylistic richness of her compositions. - Ode Magazine

"review 'The Beauty Around'"

Listening through the album...attracted by opener 'Thoughts Of Today'...followed by the intimate 'Space'...dreaming away with 'Peculiar'...and hit by the happy, cabaretesque 'Hide & Seek' I'm blown away by 'The Beauty Around'. It's not only a sweet surprise, but also very mature and well arranged. Above all it's a very convincing start. - OOR Magazine (NL)

Bio

‘It was inspiring to share the stage with you’ (Leslie Feist)

‘Right on the money, you sound unusual. Great songs, great band!’ (producer Tchad Blake)

Two of the finest compliments Marike received from her favourite artist Leslie Feist (CA) and producer Tchad Blake who mixed her latest album ‘Here comes the night’. Blake worked with many well known artists like Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits and The Black Keys, but was impressed by the music from this beautiful songwriter.

Marike Jager is one of the most lauded talents of Dutch popmusic. She’s authentic and experimental, but also very charming and funny. Her music refers to a wide range of artists, from The Beatles to Leslie Feist, PJ Harvey and Tom Waits. This explains her diversity and also makes it possible for her to easily switch from an intimate theatre setting to an energetic festival show.
She travelled the world and learned to play the guitar on the road. Great ambition made her start her own record label ‘Morning Coffee Records’ (she loves fresh coffee!) and soon she got to play the Lowlands Festival where an excited audience fell in love with Marike and her band immediately. Her debut album ‘The Beauty Around’ (2006) was unanimously hailed as a ‘dream debut’ by the press. The second, ‘Celia Trigger’ hit the charts and got nominated for an Edison. With her latest album ‘Here comes the night’ (2011) Marike strikes again and comes up with something different, an exciting journey into the night. Proudly she tells about her collaboration with Grammy winner Tchad Blake: “It was such a great pleasure and honour to work with him, he’s an amazing mixer and person. And, very important, he’s a superb cook.”

A wonderful singer, guitarist and pianist, enriched with the unique sound and style of two very creative musicians. Both Henk Jan Heuvelink (wurlitzer, bass) and Nicky Hustinx (drums) always find an adventurous and exciting way to arrange the songs. Marike is a distinguished performer, and when she and her band are on stage, even the biggest gig becomes an intimate, very personal encounter.
