"Artists On The Verge"

"Artists On the Verge..."
Wednesday, February 09, 2011

If the old model is dead, then so are its charts. But that is only inviting a battle of several, newer charts, the latest of which comes from the New Music Seminar. At the next Seminar, slated for next week in Los Angeles, a new "Artist on the Verge 100" will be splashed, a move that fits the revolutionary, artist-focused zeal of the event.

This is all about breakthrough artists and bubbling acts. But what makes an artist Verge-worthy? If you want to do this right, you've got to measure a wide range of platforms, sales sources, and fan responses, and that's exactly what the NMS organizers are doing. The ranking will include music sales (physical and digital), ticket sales, frequency of gigs, touring history, merchandising sales, media (both online and print), and social media activity, among other inputs.

Then, a range of analytics from sources like BigChampagne, Next Big Sound, ReverbNation, and OurStage come into play. Separately, BigChampagne is also planning to release its own indie and DIY-focused charts, based on its own brew of blended analytics.

Sounds great, but this also invites a number of problems that could quickly consume NMS. For starters, the construction of a DIY, 'on the verge' style chart introduces huge gaming issues, especially as the chart starts to gain more attention. That is, from artists inflating any number of platform responses, an issue that numerous industry professionals have raised in the past. At its worst, that could spell an endlessly-rotating group of faces, based on lots of false positives.

Actually, flash-in-the-pans - gamed or otherwise - are already an issue at the top. "Anybody can have a number one record right now," Lady Gaga manager Troy Carter recently stated. "You know, you watch a YouTube video, somebody spoofs a YouTube video, puts autotune on it and it's number 35 on the Billboard charts. It's not hard to chart. It's not hard to get a number one record anymore. Now, what's tough is sustainability in this new space that we're in. It's very, very tough."

Ahead of the splash, here's a raw list of the first 100 "On the Verge" artists. The list is currently arranged alphabetically - for whatever reason - though we're expecting a more proper ranking ahead.

Bio

Russian-born singer/songwriter Marina V is a young and charismatic pop artist with an incredible life story and a “hauntingly beautiful” sound (L.A. Times).

“If the Beatles and Tori Amos had a child raised in Russia by Tchaikovsky, that would be me,” muses the piano-playing chanteuse, describing her musical influences.

Born in Moscow, Marina came to the US on her own at 15 and has since blossomed into an international voice, relentlessly touring & performing at venues such as Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre, the American Embassy in Moscow, and clubs from Paris to Sydney.

She's written songs for films, TV shows and ads, and had her songs appear on games, TV shows and airlines. Her song "You Make Me Beautiful" recently received an award from Sir Bob Geldof in London.

Marina has just completed her new album, MY STAR, sponsored entirely by her fans (having raised almost $30,000 via marinav.com) and produced by the renowned producer, Guy Erez (Gipsy Kings, Ryan Cabrera, etc).

From catchy pop hit sounds of "You Make Me Beautiful" to a surprise cover of Guns 'n Roses smash "Don't Cry", the 10-song album features celebrity guests from bands KISS and Collective Soul, and includes a stunning a cappella performance of a Russian traditional song, Tonkaya Ryabina.
