"Shootin' the Breeze"

"Mariya's rendition of this classic cowgirl ballad is stirring. Although the song has been covered by many great female singers, from Suzy Boggus to Tanya Tucker, Mariya lends it her own voice and sound. Considering her age, it almost seems written for her." - Rachel Miller

"The Pincher Creek Voice"

“Mariya (Stokes) wowed the crowd with her voice and also with her engaging original material. "Peanut Butter" was one of her standout moments.” - Chris Davis

"Shootin' the Breeze"

"Mariya (Stokes) took the stage like a pro as one of the opening acts for Shane Chisholm at Claresholm last Friday. The 17-year-old musician is already making a name for herself locally and beyond." - Shannon Robin

Bio

Mariya Stokes is a singer/songwriter who grew up in Stavely, Alberta. As a kid, she would sit on the stairs outside the bar room of her parents small-town pub, watching and listening intently to every band that came through town. Listening to her dad play the drums and sing, and jamming with neighbors and local musicians only made her more certain that music was what she wanted to do. By the time she was 14, she had picked up a guitar and began writing and singing her own songs. Her roots in Alberta country music and community, combined with a love of storytelling and compelling, honest stage presence, captivate audiences all over Western Canada.

Moving to the big city of Calgary, Alberta at the green age of 18, Stokes cut her teeth as a performer on stages such as the Sled Island Festival, the Canadian Country Music Weekend in Fort Macleod and Cowboy Poetry Gathering’s all over Alberta. She was the winner of the 2011 Ponoka Stampede Talent Search, a finalist in the 2013 Calgary Stampede Talent Search, and the Runner Up at the 2015 Global Country Star Search. Stokes also released her debut, self-titled EP “Mariya” in 2011, which received airtime on local radio stations.

Currently, she is recording her second EP, due to be released in January of 2016, and is an associate vocal coach to Brian Farrell, who has worked with artists such as Paul Brandt, Keisza and Sarah MacLauchlan. When she’s not keeping busy with her own projects, Stokes can be found playing rhythm guitar and singing harmony in the bands “Broomfield” and “Blue Plate Special”, or rocking out as a soprano in Calgary’s most progressive vocal ensemble, Revv 52. She took her first trip to Nashville in April of 2015 and will be heading to New York in March 2016 to sing at Carnegie Hall with Revv 52.

Stokes also volunteers at the Calgary Drop In and Rehab Centre in 2015 with a project called “Shelter From the Storm”, where she spent time with clients of the DI, as well as with other songwriters and volunteers from the Calgary area. The collective goal of the project was to create original songs, poems, and stories that captured key aspects of the DI community culture, and to craft the material into a high quality performance that reflects the culture of the DI, in partnership with the Sled Island Festival.

“Mariya Stokes is an excellent musician.  She thinks creatively and uniquely as an artist; her work ethic is exemplary - she is prepared and dependable; she has a passion for performing and continually learning about music; she listens closely to music - to hear groove, style and the stories inside the song; and she collaborates as a performer and songwriter with other fine musicians.

Mariya is an associate vocal coach with me - I respect her innovative teaching approach with singers as well as her extraordinary talents as a singer/songwriter and musician.” – Brian Farrell, Vocal Coach and Artistic Director of Revv52
