Mark Browning was a founding member of the Pittsburgh-based rock band Sandoz signed to Relix Records in New York but has written a large number of originals spanning a wide range of styles and genres.

With a heavy emphasis on lyrics, Browning’s musical influences include songwriters such as Bruce Cockburn, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan. ““Writers who spin songs that tell a story, reveal something new, or give insight into where humans find themselves in the times,” says Browning. "Of course, like anyone, I write love songs and travel songs, but I write political commentary too--it is not something I beleive artists should shy away from, especially now."

Browning’s own material comes out of a rambling lifestyle. “I started out in biology, collecting reptiles for zoos and museums in my teens, but then just traveled. I pruned apple trees in NY, farmed wheat in Washington state, painted houses in Key West, drove truck in New York City, published articles in magazines, wrote scientific papers, hiked the Amazon and Andes, even ended up training sea lions in a zoo for a few years.”

“You might say I worked my way through the alphabet, but I was more of a songwriter moonlighting as a zookeeper than the other way around. I think the cover of my recent album Out From Nowhere really tells the story… me walking in from nowhere into the Modern City that looks a lot like Oz. The journey gives a different perspective and that perspective is imbued in the songs.”

American Sky is a rock ode to growing up in the Deep South; Emma Mae is a haunting love song set in a foggy seaport town; Dark Moon’s lyrics spin a picture a world gone off center, its people searching for meaning in the wreckage of failed symbols; California Breezes celebrates the beautiful land of that area, blending it with the soul and spirit of a woman. A Million Miles from Salvation (but Two Steps Away from a Tin Foil Hat) is a humorous jab at the growing number of people who embrace conspiracy theories. And those are just a sample.
