Feeling a bit camera shy

Mark makes his debut in the New York music scene with the release of "St. John Sings."

His new life as a singer/songwriter is a far cry from his previous role… as a physician. Yes, he’s a real doctor. And yes, he actually quit medicine to pursue his passion… music (his parents were very proud and told everyone at Tuesday night Bingo). While medicine was enormously rewarding both intellectually and emotionally, the quagmire of bureaucracy and the grueling lifestyle left precious little time or energy to do anything else… namely music.

So, as he puts it:

... I hung up the white coat and "went for it." I… "reached for the stars." I… "followed my bliss." I… "left a lucrative and highly prestigious career to become a musician."’

Go Figure.

Mark’s wacky adventures before doctoring included: teaching Outward Bound courses doing mountaineering and whitewater rafting, and making Dancing Bear T-shirts to sell while on tour with the Grateful Dead. When the T-shirts sold out, he sold cheap beer out of a garbage bag filled with ice (once again, this all made his parents very proud). When he’s not busy as a volunteer building agricultural infrastructure in 3rd world nations, he feeds and clothes the poor.

At this point, it might be interesting to find out about all Mark’s previous albums, great artists with whom he’s shared the stage, and to peruse luminous quotes from well known industry people and publications. But since none of the above has occurred, that would really be quite superfluous (actually, he DID once sing "New York, New York" at Ted Koppel’s house).

He has, however, submitted his music to for review… and here’s what some folks had to say:

"I hear this voice. And it's one of those voices like Tom Waits or Benjamin Smoke... and it's a voice born of experience."

"Emotive and Intelligent. Song in its purest form."

"Beautiful simplicity and painterly lyrics."

"Song that's rich with mood, mood, mood."

"Soulful and committed."

"Stark and Pleasing."-

"Sometimes there's more said in a single solitary voice and guitar than can ever be put across by a thousand musicians with crates of equipment."

In 2000, in his initial quest to make a living doing music, Mark started his own production music library business, MBA Music (, supplying stock instrumental music to TV, film, and video productions. He also composes original music and jingles for radio and TV commercials, including spots for Showtime, Dupont, and the widely known ad campaign "Its my #1 choice" … for Manhattanville College.

With his music production business past the chaotic start up phase, he has turned his attention to songwriting, resulting in "St. John Sings," which Mark produced and mixed as well.
