Bio

Pavel Markelov was born on December 17, 1973 in a family of musicians: his mother is a violinist, and his father is a composer. From the early age he was greatly influenced by the music atmosphere in the family. In his third year at elementary school he joined the A. Lyadov music school, where he chose his instrument the clarinet.
From 1989 to 1993 Pavel studied at the Gnesins Music College. In 1999 he graduated from the Russian Gnesins Academy of Music, class of clarinet led by Professor A. Fedotov. In 1996 he won the 1st prize Clarinet Winner of the Russian National Competition in St. Petersburg.
Besides clarinet performance, during the years of schooling Pavel also became interested in the profession of a conductor. In his third year at the Academy he simultaneously started studies of conducting and had actively practiced with the Academy student orchestra. During the period of practice he also prepared various concert programs that included his own arrangements and had been performed in the Great Hall of the Academy.
Since 1997 Pavel has already been working as a second conductor in the Moscow Youth Symphonic Orchestra. Some of the programs that he prepared included Romeo and Juliet by P.Tchaikovsky, Symphony 1 by S. Prokofiev and Bolero by M. Ravel. In 1997 he won the 2nd Prize Conductor Winner of the Russian National Competition, in addition to that Pavel has demonstrated excellent skills in piano performance and as a result he often represented the piano department of the Academy.
Just year before graduation from the Academy Pavel became actively engaged in teaching. He trained applicants to music college (clarinet), gave private lessons of clarinet performance, music theory, saxophone and piano.
In 2002 he was employed by Music School as a teacher of clarinet and saxophone. While working at the school, Pavel developed his own teaching methods and repertoire for children who only start learning the instrument. This aimed at developing an individual talent of each child. As a music teacher Pavel has successfully prepared two pupils to enter the Gnesins Music College.
In 1999 he was selected for post-graduate professional development studies in clarinet performance at the Moscow P. Tchaikovsky State Conservatory, and in 2001 he graduated with Honours Degree.
Since 1999 Pavel Markelov has been working at leading Moscow orchestras. He actively participates in concerts in Russia and abroad; plays solo with orchestras in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities of Russia. He has performed in Spain, France, Turkey, Germany and China.
In 2000 he played with the State Borodin Quartet where he performed The Quintet for clarinet and string quartet (h-moll) op 115 by J. Brahms.
Pavel constantly participates in the Festival of Modern Music Moscow Autumn, the Festival of Chamber Music J. BrahmsF. Schubert (Moscow), the Russian National V. Safonov Festival (Kislovodsk) and also conducts master-classes in the cities of Russia. He leads chamber orchestras and ensembles, prepares arrangements for music projects. His more than ten years of experience as a performer allowed him to obtain a serious and versatile repertoire. He has written numerous music transcriptions for clarinet and piano. Pavel has collected an interesting clarinet repertoire, covering all areas of music art: from Vienna classics to daring transcriptions of American and Latin American music.
Presently Pavel resides in Toronto with his wife and a three-year old daughter.
